I own a 2000 Pathfinder and I (and apparently the dealer as well) am baffled by this problem. The gauges on the instrument panel intermintedly stop working while the vehicle is running. The gauges usually work fine once I restart the engine. This behavior tends to happen during warm weather.

The dealer has already replaced the speed sensor in the transmission. They also replaced the circuit board behind the instrument cluster. These repairs work for about 2 weeks then the problem returns.

Any ideas????????

Interesting that you brought this up. I've been experiencing something similar to what you're going through. During hot days here in CA, my tachometer in my 240SX will stop working. The needle will either stop moving all together or rev up to about 2k then idle there till I get on the clutch. It's strange because at night when the weather cools down, my tachometer will function just fine.

Perhaps it could be a defective gauge cluster. That's the only thing that comes to mind.

if all gauges are going dead, tac, speedo, fuel and temp. i would agree with the dealers choice to replace the unified meter assembly(circuit board). i wouldnt go after the speed sensor on the trans if all gauges were dieing out. So I have to wonder if it is in fact all the guages? also it is not unheard of to receive a bad unified meter from the supplier. it has happened to me twice. the only other thing that could cause a complete meter failure would have to be power or ground problem to the meter. to give you a bit of technical info about the meter, it isnt like the old instrument cluster your used to . in the old style all components were individually wired and operated seperate from all the other guages. the unified meter operates much like your ecm. it recives signals from different sensors and displays the information with the needles. and it also relays the speed signal to the ecm ,tcm and ascd.

The dealer installed a new speedometer and tachometer (the type with the white background). Apparently the heads went bad. So far everythings seems to work fine now.
