instrument gauge cluster question

i am putting new white illuminated faces on the guages. i have to remove the old faces in order for the needles to run properly. there just isn't enough room for both faces. i can slip the new ones over the needles but i can't take the old ones off unless i remove the needles. so................ i am worried about the speedo and tach needles after i remove them. i don't want the guages to unwind or get messed up and cause a problem. i also don't want to cut the old ones. The temp and gas i can just mark and they should be fineanyone know the proper way for this bull $hit.
