You probably jumpered to a wrong wire. Try taking the dimmer wire off and see what happens.

Yes, the dimmer wire is connected to headlights, so when you turn the headlights on, the head unit dims. If the radio is the only thing you've changed, then the troubleshooting is pretty simple.

Double check your fuses and relays. I can't remember which one, but I know I've seen a fuse cause a similar issue. The high beams come on as a "safety" thing or something.

Ok, Just out of curiosity, you didn't happen to hook the radio back up before you swapped relays, did you?

Also, just verify your wiring against this diagram: http://www.nicoclub.com/archives/wiring ... m-z32.html

Usually I see this happen with the illumination wires. I'm talking 90% of the time. If none of that checks out, there may be a problem with the stalk switch, but seeing as the dash is out, I'm betting you've got a wrong wire shorted somewhere.

So has this been resolved?

I have an 89 fairlady z32 and driving down a semi bumpy back road this morning, I lost all my cluster and exterior running lights. High beams defaulted to on and signals all continue to work.

I do not have a stereo in the car. Car was gutted when I got it about 2 weeks ago. Driven down this road four times now and this is the first issue. Help would be great. Driving it to work in the morning.

Thanks

Of course they suggest that. They get paid by the hour.

I just need help on where I should look into this issue. Fuses were
Fine. Gotta check relays tomorrow before I drive it to work but the car has been gutted. I have sensors etc just laying in the hatch area. No stereo, just a hole in the dash...

Any other suggestions besides buy a new harness?

Fixed my lights and cluster issue tonight. It turned out to be a 20amp fuse below the steering wheel up against the side of the firewall. It looked good and continuity checked good but it was still fried.
Swapped it out and all my lights worked.

Mine was a yellow 20amp atc fuse. Top row of three rows, second from the back of 5 fuses.
Gave me cluster illumination and all my running lights again. I would have to find a fuse block diagram to tell you what it's actually supposed to do.
