I recently purchased a base 2012 Rogue S that does not include XM radio nor bluetooth capability. The salesman advised that the factory installed radio was prewired for satellite radio. My question is do I have to purchase a separate satellite-ready head unit in order to have XM radio or can I just purchase the xm tuner and have it installed to the stock radio in order to receive the service. Same question for Bluetooth capability. Would I have to get a separate head-unit to have this capability or are there any aftermarket kits that will turn the factory unit into a Bluetooth capable unit.

I would say go for aftermarket unit with all toys and whistles. If you decide to go for stock unit then you need bluetooth adapter which will be connected to your stock radio as well as xm adapter but...for bluetooth you will need a mic which originally located in SL/SV next to map lights (check out small grill next to it). Then you will need xm antenna which could a pain to install because you will have to remove your original fm antenna (the one that goes to the roof) and replace it with another one from nissan which compatible with your radio. On a top of it if you have to have answering button which is located on steering wheel in SL/SV. So it is not just amount of work which is doubled comparing to aftermarket radio but the price will be even higher rather than getting all these toys from manufacture via SL/SV models. Not worth it in my opinion. Here's example...xm kit for original radio is $200  :http://www.xm-radio-satellite.com/isni1 ... ace-2.aspx

Thank you for such prompt reply. I just thought that adding an xm tuner to stock unit would do the trick and be a simpler, cheaper solution. Did not think about all the other points you just brought out regarding the antenna, speaker/mic for bluetooth, etc. I already researched some aftermarket units which should have all the bells and whistles I'm looking for at a reasonable price at Best Buy. I would normally try doing the install myself but have not done this kind of thing in over 20 years so I'm not about to try on a brand new vehicle. Any feedback on whether its a good idea to have Best Buy do the install or should I go with local car audio installer for the job. Thank you again.

It is not that hard but if you don't comfortable then go to any stereo shop for installation. Look at FAQ on this forum...there's a lot of useful info about radios/installation. You can even buy it online if you find it cheaper and then go to your local shop for installation. The difference between home made and "official" installation is mostly antenna. Navigation/XM antennas would get the best signal outside of the car but to make it easier MOST of the shops installing it inside of the car. If you ask them to install antennas outside they will simply run the cable throw the door/window and that's about it. If XM radio is all you worrying about then you can get a portable adapter and connect to aux input. To hide cable you can convert cigarette adapter to 2 wires and hide it under dash. Here's my old setup until I got pioneer radio installed:
