Yes, I agree it is way way way easier with the transmission already on it. I guess I can try and share a few *off the top of my head* ideas. You can try to unbolt the motor mounts and lift the motor from the front, or you can place a block of wood with a jack to push up on the main pulley. With the motor tilted, you will probably need a second hand or a transmission jack and lift the transmission STRAIGHT UP without tilting etc. I don't see why you would be an inch away because there should be adequate space for the transmission to go a little higher then it needs to. Also, with the shaft in or almost in, you can rotate the tail shaft while it is in gear to position the splines.
