I will be ordering a set of rear shocks for my J30 from Joe at Infiniti Parts USA. The lower portion looks easy to remove but how do you get to the upper bolts to remove the old shock. Do you remove the rear seat or the liner in the trunk or both? I know it will need to be lined up after installing the new legs. Any other input would be really helpful.

your going to have to remove the trunk liner. you will see the bolts holding the top of the strut/spring assembly to the shock tower. do not remove the center bolt, but the perimeter bolts.

prior to that step, you should have had the car up on jackstands, the wheel removed, and the lower strut mounts removed.

after you unbolt the strut from the tower, remove it from the car.

using a spring compressor [it can be done without a compressor, but it is VERY dangerous, so im not going to say] compress the spring, and remove the bolt from the end of the strut rod. [the center bolt i told you not to remove when taking out of vehicle]

you may need a pair of vice grips to hold the strut rod while removing the bolt. [not usually, the strut rod is usually flatted to mate with the top spring perch]

installation is the reverse of removal.

is a spring compressor a common over the counter tool for the diy guy. Also nned to replace the front strut rods. are there replacement rubbers or does the entire rod need to be replaced? thans for the advice. i'm working on a budget with this car and trying to save precious resources. Infiniti locally wants 197.00 ea. for the rear struts infiniti parts usa list them at 134.00 plus S&H. I need to call them to see if they stock the front strut rods and a center bearing.

find an auto parts store that rents tools. usually, you have to pay the full price of the tool, and you get a refund based on how long you use it [may be different near you. ask about it]

for example, my local parts store charges 10% a day. if you go over 10 days, its yours. you get no refund.

also, the fronts are different. im pretty sure they are cartriges. i cant say how to do those, i would have to see them.
