I have been working on this "project" vehicle for a little while now. It's my daughter's and I have some posts on here about the issues with it. I have a few questions I hope I can get some help with.

Current Status: I have replaced the head gasket, the upper and lower timing chains and sprockets, and am currently preparing to install the oil pump and the distributor.

1. I have the engine at TDC, and have verified this with a dial indicator. The cam lobes are pointing the correct way, and all the timing marks on the chains and sprockets are aligned per the FSM.

Since the gear drive for the oil pump is helical, do I (after setting the oil pump shaft and pump to it's TDC mark) rotate the oil pump gear "a little" one way or the other before installing the oil pump? I know the pump will likely rotate a bit and I want to make sure it stays in time.

2. Does it matter if I install the distributor before I install the oil pump? I'm thinking if I have the distributor set in the correct timing position (matches position exactly when it was taken out) maybe the oil pump timing will be easier?

3. What is the correct order of operations for this install? Oil pump first or distributor first?

4. After installing the head gasket (Felpro HS 26171 PT-1) and the timing covers (upper and lower), I found in the FSM a line that says I should put RTV on the head gasket where the two timing covers overlap the head gasket (pg. EM-25, NISSAN XTERRA, MODEL WD22 Series Manual).

The head gasket did not have RTV on it originally at the two timing chain cover overlaps (upper and lower where the head gasket fits in-between them), and I'm wondering if I have given myself a built in oil leak by missing that line in the FSM

Here is the gasket set: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/fel-hs26171pt1

Is it necessary with the head gasket (graphite type with a "red" stripe of sealer that it has on both sides of the head gasket) to seal it with RTV at the top of the lower timing cover and the bottom of the upper cover?

I'm currently at a point where I could go back in and remove both covers, clean them, and put them back in with the RTV on the upper and lower covers at the head gasket interface if necessary. But I'd rather not if I didn't have too.

Found some answers! Here's what I have found out so far:

ANSWER: Chilton's for the win! The oil pump shaft interface with the distributor should be pointed at the 11 o'clock position once the oil pump is installed. Then the distributor should be in the correct position for TDC installation.

2. Does it matter if I install the distributor before I install the oil pump? I'm thinking if I have the distributor set in the correct timing position (matches position exactly when it was taken out) maybe the oil pump timing will be easier?

ANSWER: Oil Pump First! See number 1 above for the reason.

3. What is the correct order of operations for this install? Oil pump first or distributor first?

ANSWER: Oil Pump.

ANSWER: Good news on the head gasket sealing interface between the upper and lower timing chain covers! I spoke with Felpro Technical Support and the "red" stripe is a sealing bead of silicone intended to help prevent leaks, so I'm good. If I have to pull the covers later, then I will need to use RTV sealer as the "red" stripe is used up and will no longer seal.
