pull the cap off. mark on the base of the dist where the rotor is pointing. mark where the bolts holding it to the engine are in the slots. unbolt it,pull it out , line up the rotor on the new distributor and slide it in. make sure the rotor points to where the mark is on the old dist. fine tune it by lining up the marks at the slots. you should be dead on with the old timing setting.

Thanks for the info. I have another question I have pulled my rotor before I posted this question, my problem was that I have not remmember the position of the rotor so I just put it in not knowing if its on the right position. Is this OK?

Maybe I'm missing something, but I'm not understanding this. I have the upper timing cover on. I have no idea where the distributor and gear were facing. I'm actually getting a whole new unit cause the other was melded to my old timing cover(?). When I get my new unit, how do I instal it aat TDC? Iknow the bolt position for the ones that hold it to the head, but the gears turn. So are there any distinguishing marks to look for? Am I retarded?

When it is fully seated in the cover the rotor should be pointing at #1 plug wire.

Is there a marking on the rotor? I'm sorry but car is at my friends and I'm just trying to get all the info so when I tackle this tomorrow. BTW how long of a job should this install be? (doesn't seem that complicated)
