Help!! My mechanic is a dork. He replaced a fuel pump on my 91 Q45 and apparently didn't ground it correctly, so it blew my Fuel Pump Control Module. So I thought I'd find out from any of you the right way to install both fuel pump with proper ground and the new FPCM..........also just in case he's an even bigger dork......where do I tell him the FPCM is?

Thanks for your help.

Unfortunately I know a little bit about this! :DClick here to check out my thread on this topic...

As far as your mechanic not grounding the pump properly, I don't know how that's possible. You just hook the red wire with the rubber cover to the pin marked (+) and the black wire to the (-) pin. I assume your tech. is using a factory pump? If not, make sure he does so... you can get one at a discount at from our old friend joe at http://www.infinitipartsusa.com If your car has any spliced in wires to ground from the fuel pump harness or controller harness, this was a rigged fix to bypass the tri-mode controller and have the pump run at full speed at all times. Typically the idle/low mode goes first.

Also make sure he uses a new o-ring, and replaces the fuel filter.

As far as the location of the FPCU, it hangs from the package tray on the right side of the car near the right speaker. Since he already has the back seat out, it'll be easy for him to get out. It's held in place with 2 10mm bolts that go through the top side.

Good luck finding a replacement. Took me a week of looking - I think that's one of the first things that go from a wrecked Q. I'd call http://www.rosevilleauto.com and http://www.ninfiniti.com unless, of course, your mechanic is picking up the tab for the $379.00 new unit! Expect to pay $150 for a junk yard unit, unless you find someone who doesn't really know what it is (like I did) and can get it for about $50.

Welcome to NICO!

The mounting bolts are the ground path, not bolting it in or supplyong a clip on ground wire [before activation] can damage engine ecu as the signal wire from ecu has a gound wire but it is inadequate to supply all the current return.

More Q are probably destroyed by poorly trained [lack of experience] techs than by the owners lack of service because the Q was/is so different [not necessarily more complicated] from the bulk of the 1990 cars they work on.

Same with Jag or BMW V8/V12 or Porsche.........quirky.

For the life of me, I could NOT find the two 10 mm fuel pump control unit topside bolts holding the bracket in place.

After removing the rear seat bench, rear seat back, upper tail light, rear package shelf (aka rear sundeck), and rear package basin (aka storage binnacle), .... uh.... I STILL could not find the fuel pump control unit topside bolt heads.

Finally, I asked a friend to mark with whiteout where my fingers estimated the bolt heads to be in the black gunky sound-proofing material (as I lay in the trunk eyeing the fuel pump control unit underside bracket and tapping the spot where the bolt heads should be (with my arm akimbo out the open sundeck package basin opening).

When we cut thru the rear sundeck sound-proofing gunk, voila! Finally I saw the two topside 10mm fuel pump control unit bracket bolt heads (see photo).
