Any reasons why you chose the 4G-X instead of the 4G-M? While using their comparison tool it looks they have the same specs (number of bands, amount of gain. 4G LTE Support) for $100 less.

X model is for the countryside, like deep rural areas. No difference when in the city compared to the M model.

Side story: ill be moving to a state in a few months, where about an hour outside the metro area = and then cellphone signal goes to total zero. Venture out even further, and gps goes away!

This is literally false.

GPS signals come solely from satellites which can reach anywhere on the globe not covered by solid structure. At any time, you will likely have atleast 5-6 satellites within "line-of-sight" to your GPS receiver.

False? Start from phoenix and head up to oatman az - and then tell me what i said was false. Go from phoenix and head up to flagstaff, through sedona. Tell me how many times gps & cell signal is dead.

If you use AGPS (using cell signal to AID in speed of GPS pinpoint), then yes, it may be the case, but cell signal has NOTHING to do with GPS signal ESPECIALLY if your phone/GPS device can lock on to GLONASS signal (Russian sats. - adds 24 more sats to lock on to).

It even works in middle of Sahara desert.. Flagstaff would be like NYC compared with some remote places that can lock onto SAT GPS signals. Now, it would be different story if there were a lot of trees/tunnels but I do not remember either when I was travelling in North AZ few months ago...

Cell signals, yup, they get lost.

That makes more sense than. The thick valley walls, if narrow, can prevent reception of GPS signal. The satellites are rarely directly above you. Even if one was, you'd require a minimum of 3 satellites to calculate position with trilateration.

In any case, I did not mean to detract from the subject of the post. I did not even know cell-boosters existed. Can we put them in airplanes?? :yesnod

That said, I thought cell signal boosters would only work if at LEAST 1 bar of signals exists? if there is no signal, there is nothing there to boost, correct? I wonder how much of help this device would be.

That said, I did not think google maps would work without cellular data in the first place, no? Unless you pre-load the region's map to your phone first. Try using real GPS app (Here maps is free) and pre-download all the map data to the phone (about 2-4GB) and then travel and see how often you lose the bearing.

I know that my old Honda's GPS (circa 2006) is tied to the speedometer of the car so it works to some degree even without ANY GPS signal. (it knows the current speed, and direction due to built in compass, so it can follow along on the map as to where I am going even without GPS signal with some what ok accuracy, as soon as it recaptures the sat signal, it corrects position).

I will be waiting for your review...

I recently found an option in Google maps to download all the data needed for a trip once it determines your route. This way, on a stretch of road with no data coverage, it will still successfully navigate (assuming required GPS satellite reception).

If this is true, that's awesome. I thought this stuff was only in boats and airplanes' RNAV equipment.

Note: When flying fighter jets in areas with lead, silver or iron mines, UHF radio transmissions to base stations would sometimes be lost due to reflected signals and duplicated false signals. GPS satellite signals are not geosynchronous and therefore can be reflected in different directions by ground objects. Remember, there are 6 orbits of 4 satellites each that cover the earth.

Another note: Do the cell phone towers use satellites to transmit locations of cell phones (that are turned on) in an effort to keep track of where cell phone users are located?
