installing cam

i am going to put in a new cam on my freshly rebuilt motor. with the crank set at TDC, #1piston and #4 up, when putting the head on with the new cam already installed, how will i now if the cam is on the compression stroke? there are 2 strokes and how will i know if i am correct. this is on a SOHC kae. I know the dot on the cam sproket should be at 3 o'clock.
