I have a bad Altenator, and I was wondering if any one can tell me the easiest way to get it out and install the new one. We have looked for manuals on the 240 but can't find any. It is a 1990 240sx hatchback. Any help would be great. Thanks!

EDIT: If anyone has a Chilton's Manual for the '90 240SX and is willing to sell (using paypal for payment) please PM me or email me at [email protected]. Thanks!

It's not Chilton's, it's better and it's also free.

Ive never worked on a KA24E engine before, but its a pretty simple process on the DE. Its a LOT easier with 2 people, just release tension on the belt (theres a long tensioner bolt right there on the alt), take the tensioner assy off of the alt, then take the electrical connections off (I beleive 3: a small ground, a big plug, and a big positive wire), then the big bracket bolt comes off last. Have a friend guide the alt down and out of the engine while you wiggle it from the top.

Install is in reverse of course, the top person wiggle techique is gold for getting that long bracket bolt in btw...

Good luck, it's a pretty easy thing to do: its really not that much trouble with 2 people.

you don't need two people. Just undo the tensioners at the top, and go from the bottom to remove it. very easy to do. should take about 1-2 hours to get done. when you're pulling it from the bottom though, take off that lower part of the fan shroud that comes off...the lower part of the circle.

note: ghetto ascii art coming up. |O | that's your fan shroud, take off the lower part of the O. lol

Yup, undo the alternator belt tensioner, pull the belt off, take off the through-bolt and locking bolt, disconnect the wiring and pull it off. Reverse to install new one.

Also, much easier to do from the bottom. You just have to drop a couple of bolts from the shield on the bottom and work around the rest of it.

I didnt say you NEED 2 people, it's just easier if you have 2... especially when putting it back in.

Doesnt work. Do you have it to send to me? Perhaps through AIM or something? Yahoo mail now allows 100MB of free webmail storage...

I'm sorry, I took that file down because no one had downloaded it for a couple weeks. It's back now.
