Okay, The 300zx rotors have been sitting around a while (I'm not sure how long, but let's say a couple months or so). There is also some surface rust.

Would it be advisable/ok to just slap the system on w/o doing anything else?

Or should I resurface the rotors? Is it okay if I resurface w/o changing the pads?

I plan on using brake cleaner on the rotors prior to install to clean up the rust, and maybe some degreaser on the calipers (anyone care to go through what I should do w/ a degreaser, cleanup procedure?).

Any pre-procedures that should be done prior to installing advice would be great. I've read the importnut stuff & the info from sillbeer but still would like to know any more info I could have missed/forgotten before I do my install.

THANKS!

i wouldnt go crazy with the degreaser, and brake cleaner is just to remove grease and such from the rotors after working on them with greasy hands and such.

you should have them resurfaced, shouldnt cost much and that will ensure that they are completely smooth when you put them on the car.

if u resurface ur rotors its a good idea to get new brake pads because if the pads are worn to the shape of the wonr rotors, they will warp the resurfaced ones as well.

i should note that hawk brake suggests breaking in new rotors with broken in pads.

Thanks for the reply, here's what I'm thinking:

- Install everything w/o resurface (the pads were w/ the rotors - both used). Not the best idea, but worse case, I can always get it resurfaced once it's installed if it turns out to brake really bad.

- Clean lightly w/ the brake cleaner.

- Set to go.

I just called up my favorite mechanic and it's $100 to resurface all 4 rotors. I can get brand spankin new ones drilled to 4 lug for $300, or ~$200 for brembos and $140 for generic 5 lug if I go 5 lug conversion later down the road.

I just need these rotors/pads to last for the rest of the year (especially since I've paid for them to be shipped to me, so hopefully I can use them w/o spending too much more money).

Thanks for the suggestions/comments so far guys.

My 300zx rotors were pretty rusted when I finally put them on. All I did was clean some of the rust off with wd-40, and then rinsed that off with some thinner.

Rust on rotors is pretty normal. If you don't drive your car for a few days, the rotors will start getting rust on them. It's perfectly fine. The brake pads will clean off the rust.

I say as long as your rotors aren't warped, you'll be safe driving on them. You can save that hundred bucks on something more useful.

surface rust is fine, the brake pads will take that off almost instantly, but if the 300 was sitting for a while, it may not look deeper, but it may be.

My rotors sat in my room for 6 months before I put them on. Not to mention how long they've been sitting before that.(They were rusted when I got them)

If his have been sitting for only a few months, I'm pretty sure they'll be just fine.

Just slapped the fronts on Saturday. No warp (hoo hoo!).

Couldn't do the rears & mc because of time & lack of the right socket size for rear axle (thought it was 33mm, even 34mm wouldn't fit).
