Installed Z1 TT transmission in N/A - now fluttering speedo, no PS boost

I recently purchased a 1995 N/A 5-spd, and replaced the transmission with a Z1 Manual TT transmission.

Z1 states the speedo gear must be changed, which we did, but I am still getting speedo fluctuations between 50-60MPH where the needle rises and falls +- 5pmh.

Also, the speed sensitive power steering does not work. New rack was installed as well.

The original speedo did the same thing and eventually went to zero when cold and fluctuated after driving a mile. Shop replaced speedo after saying original had no output to ECU. Speed sensitive PS stopped working with that behavior and original transmission.

I also think I read the speed sensor on the Z1 TT transmission is internal as opposed to external on N/A units.

Thoughts?

Thank you for your time in responding...

Don

Welcome to NICO Club!

My first thought with the fluttering speedo is bad wires or plugs. Even with the wrong unit, I'd expect smooth transitions between speeds, not a bouncing needle. Does your tach respond appropriately? I'd get in there with a voltmeter and test all the wires between the sensor and the ECU to start. Test for Ohms and continuity on each wire and check each plug contact, including those pins on the ECU plug. You want nearly zero ohms and positive continuity.

I do not know much about the wrong and right speedos to use. Have you contacted Z1 for such information?

I think the steering will be fixed when the speed is properly detected by the ECU.

Thanks. I found further information regarding fluttering needles as evidence of circuit board corrosion. It's being sent out for rebuild.

Oh, okay. Well, if you haven't sent if off already, check this thread as it might be something you can get at yourself....

Does that help? You don't want to change the Speedo I think, but if you look at those solder points, you may find the corrosion you're looking for.

Thx, but the issue I'm having is that there is no or intermittent signal from the speedo which is causing the variable power steering to become inoperative.

My shop must also change the gear in the spoked sensor to regulate my 10mph difference in reading at highway speed.
