Installed a set of LED DRL's

Hey guys,

So i was looking for something cheap and fun to do, along with giving the pathy something new look wise, i bought a pair of LED DRLs of ebay, now i know there are better sets out there but you also have to drop alot more $$ for them. This set cost me like 20 bucks. I wired mine so when i put the keys in the iginition and turn once, or twice to ACC, and then while the car is running they are on. Im probably going to wire them up to a switch in the future, but i didnt have a switch laying around so i just did it that way.

I think they came out pretty good, considering i only dropped $20 for this mod i wasnt expecting wonders either. I just installed them today and i havent had a chance to see how they look at night yet so i will update with night pics soon also.

One more thing is that i thought of putting them into the fog light grills which i think would give it an even cleaner appearance but i held off on that now since if it cut the back of one, and i dont want them there , the grills will look like crap and i don;t feel like shelling out $25 each or more for a piece of grill plastic.

Nice, I think it would have looked quite a bit better if the LED strips spanned the whole length of each cut-out instead of being centered. Maybe it would look more "OEM".

But for $20, its pretty good

hey, i was thinking of installing some LED DRLs on my QX4, similar to yours. how did you wire it so that they turn on when the car is on and turn off when the car is off?

I took these off like 2 months later, but the way i had it setup is if you had the key in the ON position, one before actually starting car, they would come on, and obviously also be on when the car was started. If the key is in ACC which is the one after off, they will not come on.

The drls should each have 2 wires, 1 positive 1 negative, i took 16 gauge wire, spliced both drl negatives into the one 16 gauge, then both positives in another 16 gauge wire.

Now you will have 2 wires, i ran the one to the negative on the battery, the positive i ran thru the drivers side firewall, there is a small plate with 2 screws you can take off beneath the brake booster in the engine bay, run it through there, then from the inside it will be a little bit above the brake pedal to the left, grabbed it from there, took out my windshield wiper fuse ( wipers only come on if car is started or in the ON position ), and put it in the slot, then inserted the fuse back in.

Thats basically it, i may have gotten the terminology of first turn of the key ( ACC ) and 2nd turn ( ON ) confused, i forgot what they are actually labeled but you get the picture.

Those looked great, why did you remove them? I like drl's it really helps other drivers see you, in broad daylight they can still think your parked, it also just makes it easier for people to see you coming i.e if they are waiting to turn onto a busy street, less likely to cut you off!i use my fogs as drls i wired them up to the a/c relay they operate like yours. Your pathy looks great

I would go with the 2nd picture, they align better with the bottom bumper body line.

So i was messin around with my audi saturday and i ended up installing the drl's i took off the path. I think it looks good, ill try to get some better pictures later - its night and iphone quality.








And yes if you guys are wondering, i do have a ridiculous light setup on my audi. 12000k Purple projectors, 3000k fogs, and now the drls lol. Looks clean in real life and i havent seen anyone else with this setup on the road before.

And videoguyjh, how did you wire them up? same way i did mine? And take some pictures of it farther away so we can get a better look

Interesting light setup. I've never seen anything like that, which makes it that much more unique! I like the DRLs on the Audi too! Very colorful! lol

For my setup, I opted for a DRL automatic control switch, since I am not that experienced with wiring. Here's the control box that I got, very easy installation (directly to the battery):

i just did the same thing and i wired mine into a toggle switch i installed in an open port by the steering wheel then i ran the switch into the fuse box in an empty slot i found. This way i could control if i want them on or off

Oh and the ones i have have blinkers in them. Any idea how i wire them into the blinker?

Hey Miami, the Audi looks nice. I inherited an '03 ?3Liter recently, not sure what I'm going to do to/with it yet. It has 80ish Kmiles and all the bells & whistles.

Any decent online boards for them?

im assuming a4? The 3.0 is a good daily driver if anything, but mods for them are non existant really other then a $5000 supercharger, and all the other normal stuff like exhaust, intake etc which doesnt add much.

03 1.8t, a ton of mods, even just a $500 ecu chip, and you are already beating the 3.0 in every aspect. I have the 1.8t and i have a APR Stage 1 93 octane chip, i go from 170 crank hp and torque, to 214 hp and 247 tq at the crank just with that, but im doing a bigger turbo setup on it soon or a 4.2L v8 swap.

If your not looking for performance, the 3.0 will do you just fine and you live in Massachusetts it says so awd will be nice in the winter.

Hey Thanks Miami!

I just checked the title while doing some other stuff.

It's an '04 A4 Quattro. Currently I rarely drive it, probably won't be-just for long trips & such. I even have had it garaged since I got it. I likely would be doing something with the fogs- like 3000k. I did that to my Pathy, and really like the look and functionality.

I just don't currently have the heart to sell it, my past brothers "baby". It's nice to have a "spare" car though, especially when I futz around with my Pathfinder.

I'm moving in July, so i might put the Audi on blocks if I won't be driving it much. My new apartment has plenty of parking, but no garage space (Yet...).

Id still use it as a weekender or something to get all the fluids moving. But other then just hope you get a garage and keep it all detailed up and take it out on nice days.

How did you connect it to the battery? Couldnt i just find a spot to ground it instead? Also what size fuse should i use? And how did you splice them? I dont have a solder or a crimp
