I have a 6spd G35 sedan and am thinking about getting a light weight flywheel.

Question...

What is involved with replacing a flywheel? Is this backyard machanic stuff, or do I need to take the drivetrain/engine apart?

Any information about this would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Andrew

Other than pulling the exhaust, drive shaft and transmission.Best done on a lift and spending 6-8 hours.

Of course your warranty may be declined on the subsystems attached to the flywheel as changing its weight will change the engine's balance.

You have to weigh the possible long term damage to the engine rear and main bearings.

yech... that doesn't sound good. Why would a light weight flywheel damage the engine bearings?

What is your opinion of Jim Wolfs hotter cams for the G35/350z? Any negative affects I should be aware of?

Thanks for the feedback!

If you want more power, I would go forced induction.

There is always a financial and mechanical downside to every mod.

Changing the cams is a big deal on a DOHC engine, again the warranty. Probably as much time or more as the flywheel.

At least external mods can be swapped or resold or transfered.

Substituting a lighter flywheel with an automatic transmission is pointless. The torque convertor has 5 times the weight of the flywheel. With a manual transmission, the flywheel is much heavier to smooth out the power pulses (which the torque convertor does).

The analysis of torsional vibration and crankshaft out-of-plane flexing is non-trivial.

Light weight flywheels will make the engine much more responsive to throttle changes, but will also increase the 'roughness' of the power. The increased torque variations might take a significant toll on transmission and driveline components as well as things on the front end of the engine.
