hello back again i brought a new q about a week ago and not the one with the av equip. i inquired about before. anyhow. i brought the car from new jersey and drove it for 550 miles back to upstate ny. i have a ten day inspect on it and i went in to midas to get an official. ( mind you this car was just inspected in august new jersey of course) well i left the car for about thirty minutes came back and then the guy says it cant pass because of my two rear tire rods and i had to pay the fee of the inspection. he also said that my steering rack was "leaking" with a bad ball joint. he then tried to quote me for parts and labor at $2500 guaranteed asap. i then disagreed with everything he has said and told him that he was trying to snowball me. my car is a 1991 q45 with 122900. the car runs in perfect condition i have all service records from the original owner. no leaks have been visible to me or about 5 other mechanics my rear tires rods dont knock or show signs of damage. and my ball joint dont show signs as well high speeds or not. are they just trying to snowball me because of the fact that they may think im not knowledgable of cars or what pleas help. will add picts later today of the q

I don't know how everyone else is going to react on this post, but it seems to me that it would be awful difficult to help you with your situation. I couldn't possibly speculate about the relative validity of the several different mechanics opinions without actually having the car in front of me.

Have you taken the time to read the "stuck" post at the top fo the q45 forum? To be honest, I just bought my first q45 about a month ago. And, if you can get away with having your vehicle be completely mechanically sound for only $2500, you are probably doing pretty well.

Until you find out about whether your timing chain guides are complete, and get a more thorough inspection of the common faults listed on this forum, you won't really have any idea how much money its going to take to get your car running properly.

chain guides were replaced at 99775 with metal giudes from the infiniti dealership and a month before i brought the car new tires brakes and rotors were replaced, i actually brought the car from my friends grandmother who took care of the car and i know this because i have service records from original ownership and everything that shouldve been done buy now is done faithfully

If everything is gravy with no signs of problems then I would just get the inspection somewhere else.I also hate the fact of the paying for a inspection upon failure.I would of told him fu I ain't paying..but thats me.If you can find a place where they hook up a diff car to the inspection machine then you'll be good to go..thats my suggestionI'm a 2nd owner like yourself,I have obtained my service records from Infiniti and it shows no service done on my suspension and already replaced two front bushings. It seemed at my local dealer ship the mechanics did every thing assbackwards, and only fixed or inspected what was wrong with the car at the time.......I think they were just lousy/lazy mechanicsGood luck with your issue!

Tie rod - 4 wheel steering 90-93 $58.92 (x2 = $120.00)

Rack assy 90-93 $170.16 (1 = $171.00) <$291.00>

Dust seal 90-93 $17.36 (x2 = $36.00) <$327.00>

End 90-93 $47.25 (x2 = $96.00) <$423.00> Lock plate 90-93 $10.70 (x2 = $22.00) <$445.00>

Plus $100 for misc. So under $600 for parts .(Keep in mind that this is going by the limited amount of info in your initial post)

I'm skeptical of most shops since a formerly trusted mechanic sold 2 oem Ford injetcors + labor,it was an Explorer, for $900.00 to a friend of mine.

As for the inspections fee, it sucks, but if they were only allowed to collect when they pass a car, they'd never fail one and thus render the NY state inspection useless (though some may say it is). Also, (Chansen) this is a safety inspection, not a smog, so hooking up another car would not accomplish anything.

Now back to the quote ...They should provide you with an itemized quote listing parts and labor (rates and time), with that in hand call Joe (Inf of Scottsdale) and have him provide you with parts and labor for comparison. If and I do mean IF there are any big descrepancies, you may have something "actionable" with your local inspection board. They watch the inspection locations pretty closely and (usually) will take action on a place that is oevr charging/over quoting for "repairs necessary to pass".

Also, post the list up and we'll let you know what is "doable" with basic tools and skills. And in some cases, you may just need to find a shop that will let you bring your own parts. Generally, a shop will charge slightly more $ pr hr labor, when using your parts as part of their profits are in the parts.

In short, get the details, post 'em up, we'll help.
