Just got a Garrett T3 60 trim from the Ford 2.3L that is supposedly remanufactured and unused. But, a couple bolts were loose, the swing arm lever was bent and missing the retainer pin and the actuator missaligned. There is a crazy rust pattern on the center part that looks like it was caused by break fluid, the compressor housing is a bit beat up in spots (looks like hammer strikes in one spot), the exhaust intake flange clearly has not been resurfaced and the intake looks to have some gasgate on it.

However, blades all look good and no shaft play.

My assumption is that this was an amature rebuild. I came to this conclusion because I don't think a professional shop would let it go out in this condition.

I don't know a ton about remanufacturing turbos but I'd assume they would be like any other recore you would get at the parts store. Looks like new, only a recore. I payed $300 for an unused, remanufactured turbo which in my mind should look pretty much new and should be tip top.

What do you guys think? Should I tell the guy to suck it or am I being too picky?

Pictures might be tuff right now as I just had surgery. I'm just thinking a remanufactured one ought to be in tip top shape with everything clean and all sufaces ground. I certianly don't think there would be bent, loose, missing or misaligned parts. Plus there is a section of compressor housing that seems to be beaten with a hammer.

How much is properly remanufactured T3 60 tim with internal WG?

Here are pictures. I have straightened the BOV linkage but retainer is missing. Also a compressor bolt is stripped. I don't know if you can see the rust on the center whachamacallit or the hammer mark on the compressor but I just have a feeling that a true professional recore wouldn't go out like that.

Damn, no pictures enabled. I'll I'm a moderator check back please.

The guy tells me it was rebuilt by "Turbo City." I went to their web site and it looks like all they do is rebuild the center section. I e-mailed them with some questions but does anybody know about these guys?

Anyway, I don't think this quite counts as being remanufactured. Why can't people be honest these days?

Remanufactured is kind of a grey area. But it's possible it was simply rebuilt. In this case the center section would actually be rebuilt. THe housings would simply be reattached as long as they weren't damaged from contact with the blades of either wheel. Cleaning up the parts isn't necessarily required, however a local turbo builder I went to gave mine a nice bath as it came back looking cleaner than when I got it(new). I'm thinking though, if you see one listed as remanufactured, it's probably just rebuilt. It's probably cheaper to buy a new turbo than to rebuild a turbo and replace housings and such.

While the swing arm for the wastegate may be of concern, the housing and parts don't make much of a difference unless it is structurally compromised(leaking air or interfering with airflow or the blades of either wheel, perhaps fitment issues as well).

The main concern will be the shaft play. If that's in check, the turbo should be fine for the most part.

As far as honesty, well it's possible he interchanged the terms rebuilt and remanufactured. Might have been an honest mistake. However, I generally approach everything with a level of skeptisism. And the reality is honesty is generally more expensive.

Seems that the center portion was rebuilt. There is a crack in the exhaust housing near the waste gate flapper and a stripped compressor bolt among other various stuff. The point of the matter is that I bid based on a remanufactured turbo so I'm kinda getting ripped off.
