I called Nippon and they emailed me some pics of about 4 front clips they have. I looked and found the one that looked the most unmodded clip and asked for the numbers on that one.

Here they are:

Compression: 150 on all 4 cylinders. Leakdown: 10, 12, 12, 14% Mileage: 58,946 km (equals 36,841 miles)

To me the compression checks out good and the mileage is good to. The leakdown isnt looking good though.

What do you guys think?

With leak down numbers like that I have to agree with this thinking.

Well this kind of may sound stupid but I dont really have to money for a rebuild. I was just planning on getting a SR20 swap and putting it in. I didnt really want to rebuild any of it except for maybe the turbo. The guy from JDMSource said that leakdown #'s should be under 20%, then my former Auto teacher said that GM's have to be under 18%.

Thats sloppy, nissan spec is 10% Any thing more and its rebuild time. You have to understand american cars are more sloppy the imports. Meaning they have a wider acceptable tolorance on almost everything. The machining on nissan engines is very tight, this is why you get such good performance out of these engines.

Thats great

Maybe a noob question but, where can I get a blown SR20 Swap from? I wouldnt do anything special just rering, headgasket, bearings, ect. Just a basic rebuild.

I would really like to just get a DET and put it in. No rebuild. I know I would rather have a rebuild, but not having a car for work and school is killing me. Thats why im trying to get a car up and running. I guess im cheap I dont want to spend the cash but dont want junk.

If you just want a car for school there are cheap cars out there that are plentiful. You done need a 240sx silvia conversion to satisfy that need. Your gonna love this but for school your could find yourself a cheap metro and make your 240 "THE PROJECT" Careful if you laugh I will tell you an incredibly long story on the metro and the 240 project

Yea, I know. Ive already got everything except for the motor and have around $2300ish to spend on a motor. That has to be shipped BTW. Nippon said $2300 shipped for their front clip and JDMSource says $2200 for their motorset shipped.

Well I wouldnt know where to get a SR as I have no intention or desire to go that route with my 240. As a nissan tech we dont ever see the SR RWD set up. So I would have no idea. Hopefully 180 will tune back in and know.

I actually sourced my blown SR from Venus Auto for about $200. It had spun a main bearing but got that pretty quickly repaired and while I was at it, made my SR feel pretty damn good. I'm sure you can call around the usual SR motor distributors for "bad" motors.

most places will only sell you a short block. meaning no transmission, ecu, maf, harness, power transistor, turbo, IC, maybe even cylinder head, etc. if you don't already have a SR swap in your car, buying a blown SR to do a swap is the worse idea i've head in a long time.

but to answer the original question. not all compression and leak down gauges are equal. as long as the numbers are consistent throughout all 4 cylinders you should be good. hell, you can even talk them down a lower price due to the fact that those numbers are low.

Well according to the guy at Nippon he said their great. He emailed the other results for the other clips and they all had like twice the mileage with 10 psi lower compression that varies, and the leakdown percentages were higher.

Well instead of trying to get it cheap im just going to order a motorswap from Heavy Throttle so I dont got to worry about this.
