I have done some research on the inner valve springs from an SR20DET motor that Ezekial has fitted to his VH45, and have found out through a local Nissan dealership that the only SR20DET motor ever to come with inner valve springs (officially, though as we all know Nissan occasionally swapped parts into other cars during production) was the one released in the N14 Pulsar GTI-R, and are very cheap to purchase brand new from Nissan in japan.

I was quoted NZ$11.20ea, which will be around US$7.

NZ$358.40 is a small price to pay for a substantial increase in high RPM reliability... I'm going to purchase a full set asap.

Can you please advise whether any mods were required to get them to fit... or whether you simply installed them & used all the standard retainers etc ?

yep as i said ... gtir sr20det

you can actually pick up a 2nd hand set cheaper ... i picked up 32 for $50 ... was originally going to be free but i was waiting too long

i have already ordered the gtir inner spring seats but i'm yet to see if they will work in the VH45 heads. hopefully not too much longer and i will know this for sure

they fit inside the standard retainers

I don't have internet at home and I haven't installed Messenger at work because I know I'll just get nothing done. Please keep me advised regarding these valve springs, I was under the impression you had fitted them already. Once you've done it, please share the info with me as I'd be keen to perform this mod also !

Sounds like a good price. Keep us posted. Maybe, you can post some pics.

Now I have a question: Can the new inner springs be used with the old springs that were on the engine?

No reason why not, the old springs won't exactly be ruined or anything. If anything, adding the inner spring would prolong the life of the outer spring by reducing its load.

The only problem with inner springs is the interference with the stem seals, and if the retainer has shelves to accept the spring. If both of either aren't adequate, the inner springs will eat the stem seals for lunch, and will stress the retainer.

A cheaper, more proven way to increase the spring pressure enough for high RPM action w/ the stock cams is to shim the stock springs about .060 to .080".

yes spring shims are a proven method of increasing spring pressure.

however i am running inners purely for their damping effect

Can someone please comment on the Stem Seal interference/non-interference as well as the lower seat fitment?
