Inner/Outter tie rod install question...

My circuit sports tie rods did not come with a lock washer so now i'm wondering. I looked at the SPL write up on installing tie rods and noticed they used a lock washer, is this for extra steering angle? Do i need them? if so, where can i pick them up? I have never done this before and to me it just looks like i basically pop the ball joint, loosen the old tie rod and remove it. Put on the boot, then i screw the new tie rod in, put the links on the hub and torque everything down, right? or wrong?
