I have a 91' Infiniti Q45, how often should one replace the inline transmission filter? Also, how much are they to replace??

Those didn't appear until 1994.

There is an internal screen filter in the transmission that is usually replaced along with the gasket, O ring and one time use bolts when the fluid is mechanically exchanged.

Some have added a microfine filter inline in the earlier models.

My pan filter {screen} was replaced once {at about 114,000 miles} it was clean, and really a waste of time and money.....external filter replaced 1x at 169,000 miles .Based off that,the pan has never been dropped again and currently the original transmission has a little over 282 thousand miles on it. Simple unscrew drain plug and drain/fill 4 quarts of high quality synthetic {Redline D4 in my case}ATF every 15,000 miles is all it takes to achieve super duper long transmission life.

My 91 has a filter looking thing that is on the passenger side of my vehicle, it is connected to the inline transmission cooler line, wondering what that is, can't seem to find it in the FSM, it is a filter with two pipes on the bottom of it?? Can someone tell me what this part is? It is located right behind the radiator, mounted on a bracket???

yes, that is the external transmission filter that came standard on the 94-96Q, it was added to some earlier 90-93Q that had transmissions replaced under warranty .cost about $120 to replace {part only}

Thanks qship96, so my transmission has been replaced before, didn't know that! I just recently had a rebuild finished on my 91, so now I can replace that filter with an aftermarket one, thanks again for everyone's replies and help!
