Haven't been on here in quite sometime, and i come to you guys with a question. I hear good and bad things about installing a cold air intake in our cars .. something about damaging the engine. Ive tried searching through posts but i guess i didn't search correctly as i could not find any info. Please give me some input on this .. i have not done any engine mods to the car just yet, but I'm looking to go simple ( K&N air filter, CAI )

And if the CAI is not a bad thing, which CAI should i go with? which one would you guys recommend?

appreciate your input

I don't think that we have many options for true CAIs. You should be fine with whichever you choose.
If your area is prone to rain and puddles, you might want to get a bypass valve while you're at it.

The 08's still have the VQ35DE engine, and the stock tune is pretty bad. If you don't want to do a lot of mods I would highly recommend an Uprev reflash and tune, (can be done over email with datalogs so you don't even have to go anywhere) you'll gain a lot more responsiveness just from recalibrating the electronic throttle to open all the way, as well as more power and a safer running engine from dialing in the air/fuel ratio.

Skip the CAI and get a K&N filter.

I would have to agree with seymore4. Unless if you're set on getting a CAI for the sound, a tune will give you more power for the money.
The cost of a new CAI is already half way to the cost of a good tune. Realistically, the intake will give you only a few hp bump and a little better throttle response.

Wha? Does that include the hardware to interface with the ECU?

Yes but its a special program where you mail the cable back after you've got the tune dialed in :) PM me for details

Shops charge $600-800 for basically the same thing but you get a cool piece of paper with your name and a couple lines drawn on it :rotflmao

Thank you for your recommendations. I really wasnt looking for more POWER just more of a sound, as you know our cars are more on the quiet side compared to FX's and G's. About this tune though, will that give me a nicer sound + power? i had never heard of that, thanks Seymore

One more thing, i definitely DONT want the car to sound like a honda. will the CAI make it loud? or just a bit nicer/deeper sound. Thanks!

If you want more sound you're going to need to free up the exhaust. The M was designed and marketed as a full size luxury car... so its designed with minimizing the sound in mind LOL

An intake will help a little, but not much. The tune won't do anything to the sound, but it will definitely give you more power.
