Another injector, #3, went out on the J. No biggie I thought. #3 is extremely easy to reach and only required minimal grinding on the plenum. Got her out in no time. Replaced with the new one, put it all back together and went to crank the motor. It got about two turns over and then THWACK!! The motor came to a violent stop. I've never felt it do anything like that before. I hit the ignition again and it was as if the motor had frozen. At this point my heart had stopped and was laying on the floor. I thought and thought WTF could have caused something so violent from a simple FI replacement. I took a look at the old injector and there was a tiny piece missing from the tip. Maybe the size of a 1/4 of a pinky finger nail clipping. Oh ****, this had fallen down into the fuel rail, I'm guessing, and probably got stuck in an exhaust valve or something.Could something SO small cause such a violent freeze?I hand cranked the motor back and then turned it over with the ignition. I did this several times until finally whatever was 'stuck' was gone. It ran fine all night. What do you guys think about this?

Sounds to me like the cylinder got full of fuel as you removed the injector and caused the engine to hydraulock. In easy terms the piston cant compress liquid, you came out lucky on that one. I have actually seen an engine bend a rod when that happens, depending on how strong the battery/starter are at the time. Glad things didn't get nasty for you.

Wow I never thought of that. I did notice the fuel level in the fuel rail was a lot higher than the last time I pulled an injector. I'm gonna go clean my shorts now.

Yikes! Hydrolocking! Man oh man. Mayhem, if you escaped from that unscathed then you have used up one of your lives. How is your engine running? Any changes from the norm? Lessons for us all. Hope all is well.

I think I'd change the oil too! You may have gotten some gas down past the rings. Never hurts to go ahead and change it. Just out of curiosity, did you pull the pump fuse and let the car die before pulling the injector?

Haha. I've already told the girl to go have the oil changed for that very reason.I did pull the pump fuse just like usual. Start it, pull it, die. For whatever reason, the fuel rail was full this time. Stunk up the whole garage with fumes. I had to get a rag and soak up the fuel out of the line to make room for the injector. Weird, it worked fine last time.

Engine is running fine. Very smooth now. I'm guessing those two injectors I"ve recently replaced had a little to do with (before they completely died) my slightly rough idle. An idle most people would never notice unless you're picky car freaks like we are. Idle is glass smooth now. :D

mayhem! that is truly crazy, but I am glad it seems the J emerged unscathed.

i can confirm rough idle (not really rough, just barely perceptable) before an injector failure, i noticed it about 1k miles before my number 3 went.

if it was indeed hydrolock, the only thing i can think of that might have contributed to this high rail pressure, given that you pulled the fuse and relieved the pressure, would be the fuel pressure regulator.

keep your nose out for any gas smell under the hood, or through the vents; that was an indication of the FPR failure on several cars i have seen, including my J.

otherwise, good to hear the idle is smoothed out,

worst case: next time just roll the car outside and wait for the fuel to evap.

You are one lucky S.O.B. man. I'm really glad to hear that the J is still running strong.
