What's the consensus on using Injector Cleaners like Lucas, Royal Purple, etc..? Owner's manual says don't do it. Why is that?

I've never heard anything bad about using those types of cleaners; not sure why the manual says not to use them. At worst they'll simply have no effect or possibly ding your mileage. Personally I just use gasoline with detergents like Shell or Chevron. If you want to be absolutely sure they're like new, get them flow tested. I had all 6 tested and cleaned for around $100 at Fuel Injector Clinic.com.

I tried this and it did seem to make an improvement, idles smoother and gained about 2 mpg.

I have used Royal Purple and Chevron Techron and like both. My brother's gas gage on his Sport Trac he got at 227,000 miles wasn't accurate. After 3 treatments of fuel injector cleaner it started working again.
