The el cheapo cleaners and some expensive ones contain methanol which is the culprit...[in injector/pump/aluminum corrosion]..........many expensive ones: BG 44k, Techron contain a strong concentration of a detergent approved by EPA for gasoline which doubles or quadruples the concentration of the same thing in the fuel.........in a xylene/tolune solution......1-2-3 ounces of active detergent in up to 8-10m ounces of gasoline like material to pour in and dilute.
Fuels could be made detergent rich for a few more pennies per gallon at the refinery instead of forcing us to pay a 75 cents-DOLLAR per gallon for the same concentrate.
I can assure you BG44k won't affect 1990 injectors having used over 80 cans in the last 15 years and 303,000 miles still as built oem injectors and o rings [they were removed once and cleaned externally].
Bad fuel purchased causes injector problems, along with avaiable to public methanol based cleaners.
Easy to look up chemical contents [code numbers-CAS [not college alcohol society]: Chemical Abstracts Service] on web.
