I have a car with the redtop sr20 in it, but I can't get it to run. New mas, new ecu new o2 sensor, good looking wiring etc.

So I want to check timing, but I can't get the car started, would timing cause the car to not work at all like this? It will only idle if I set the AFC to -50% lo throttle.

Is there a way to set timing with the car off or something? Or at least get it close enough to start?

Or maybe someone can offer me some more advice.

lift the valve cover while the motor is set to TDC compression (2nd mark on the pulley from the left) Then reajusted the CAS so that the 1st yellow mark on the right is lined up with the notch before sliding it in. As its slides in it will line up with the yellow mark to the left. That automatically sets the motor baqck to 15BTDC......

TDC MARK

THIS IS WHAT THE MARKS SHOULD LOOK LIKE WHEN THE CAS IS INSTALLED AT TDC.....

no problem.....while ur cover is off make sure your cam timing is correct also....i think mine is off a tooth or 2 and its throwin off my ignition timing as well as opening valves early/late.....

The dot on the ex cam gear (at TDC).....thats tooth #1 count clockwise and the top of the head (sealing surface that meets the valve cover) will line up with in between tooth #8 and #9......and there should be 9 links in between the 2 dots on the cam gears (not including the link over the dot).....

Thanks alot again. I reset the timing using your method today and it turned out to be wayy off, I lined up everything at TDC compression (I think before it was aligned at TDC exhaust) and the cams were already aligned.

Anyways, after doing this, the car started up on the very first try, and apparently, this is the first time the car has run well in a very long time, as I just bought it in non-running ocndition on Friday.

Also, I noticed on Heavy Throttle's website that they say that TDC is the second notch from the RIGHT, but your info is synonymous with the FSM and worked for me.

Again, thanks a ton.

GREAT!!! GLAD TO HEAR! Im happy to help u out....i hate when my cars down (like now) and appreciate any help i can get....ur welcome man.....funny...u prolly got a great deal on it since it want running.....turned out to be soooo simple....she'll run 100 times better now :)anyways i think when HT refered to the second mark FROM the RIGHT that is 15BTDC They are talking about timing the motor with a timing light.....when the 2nd mark from the right lines up with the pin the motor is set to 15btdcMarks are as follows from left to right5ATDC---TDC---5BTDC---10BTDC---15BTDC---20BTDC Thats for in case u have a NON-ADJUSTABLE timing light....u just line up at (it would be 0deg on an adjustable light) the second mark from the right....and if u have an adjustable liught set to 15Deg ull line up with TDC (2nd mark from the left)

anywhoGOOD LUCK!
