We're talkin' about a '99 I-30 with 45k on the clock. The "sevice engine soon " lite is on. The dealer said one of the coils is malfunctioning and must be changed. O.K. Fix it. They say they don't know which one it is beacause at this moment, the car is running alright. I should have said the car runs rough sometimes and some times it's fine. Why can't the dealer fix it?. Can't they tell which coil is the one? Hey, man, I don't want to replace all of them. And yes, the car is out of warranty. Please tell me what the story is. Thank You

If they don't know which one it is how do they even know a coil is malfunctioning??? Does the 99 have a "Service Engine Soon" light or is it a "Check Engine" light?

It's the "service engine soon" light. The code said that is was an ignition coil. But they also said they didn't know which one because the engine was running fine. Between the time I posted this and I saw your reply, the dealer called me back and said there are two codes for this problem. One code says ingnition coil and specifies which one. The other code says ignition coils. But not which one! I'm going to bring the car in next week to the dealer and I hpoe I don't get screwed. And if there is still any advice, I'd appreciate it. Thank You

Couldn't he just check the resistance using the multimeter? Do a test cold and then warm?

Anyone know the resistance spec for this car?

My thoughts exactly. This should have been what the dealer did as soon as they got that code. This will end up being one of those things that's cheaper to do yourself, even if you have to buy the proper tools. I'll have to check my Hayne's manual at home for the coils...that is assuming the 96 and 99 were the same.

If the coil has broken insulation, a multimeter won't help at all.I just replaced 2 on a 92 BMW, 1 was earthing internally & the other was jumping the spark externally. BOTH coils measured like the rest.

How are you out of the 6 year [from day of first retail sale] /70k drive train warranty with a 99 45k car?

I guess what tech says is correct. but if you want to work on your own

There is a way to do a high pot test. It measures the voltage the unit is supposed to hold voltage insulation to. I wonder if there is a way to know the requirements of this for this transformer. And better yet a place to do the high pot test. Used to have access to one but that company has moved some years back.

One solution without going to the extent of the above is to buy a new coil pack and install it in one loation and see if that solves the problem. If not, them move to the next cylinder and so on and so on till you find the correct cylinder.

Changing the coil packs is very simple. I think it is a 12mm socket to remove the two bolts holing the coil pack down. Unclip the connector and slde it out.

I would first buy a multimeter, will always be useful, and ohm out the wires as stated in the manual.

Good luck

The restistance of the plastic insulation changes with temperature as does the gap bridging voltage required with exact plug opening.

Only the OBD2 software is smart enough to pin point the exact misfiring cylinder..........of course an expert technican can [using a digital storage scope] monitor the O2 waveform and tell immediately - takes an hour to setup and test........you can monitor the input current WAVEFORM of each coil and see the difference.
