I just picked this car up a couple of weeks ago. It's a 3 speed automatic. It wont shift in to 3rd gear until the transmission warms up. Yes you have to be moving, it wont warm up sitting in the drive way. It will warm up in less than 2.5 miles and is fine after that. I usually take it around the block to warm it up before I hit the road. Has any one else had this problem? I would think this would be the first thing to be fixed on this restoration project. The Z Clinic THINKS it may or may not be a heat sensor on the transmission. I don't like my stuff in the shop to start with especially with a may not be problem. It's not that I don't trust them, I just want my car home with me!!

Why does my automatic transmission take a while to shift into overdrive in the morning?

It's supposed to do that. There is a temperature sensor in the automatic transmission that prevents overdrive from engaging until the transmission is fully warmed up to prevent damage.

I dont mean to doubt you but dosnt some thing sound wrong about going down the road in 2nd gear at 55 to 60 mph in a automatic till it warms up?I'll take it out again in the morning and see what I hear. The man I bought it from is the one that told me about it. He might not have known what he was talking about when he alerted me to it. He was a "put it in the shop" kind of peson, lol. That's why I was paying attention to it.
