I have 89 240sx and was wondering if any nissan engines with turbos will work in this car, without swaping out the transmission and all of the electrical parts . I bought this car for $500 the engine runs but there is a knocking sound in the engine. Do not know if it is the valves ,rods, lifters or what . The car has 131k on it and it sat still for about 2 years before I bought it .I changed the oil and oil filter and when it is running it emits a blueish smoke and smells like oil . I do not know if I should rebuild it or do a engine swap , I would like to do the one that is the cheapest . Any help or reconmendations is this matter will be greatly appreciated.

a rebuild is probobly cheaper. you could put a sr20 or ca18 in it if you dont want to spend a lot of money. those are both turbo, and they usually come with the transmission and electrical parts. if you dont want to swap those, you will need a ka-e

You could also call a parts recycler and price engines there. They usually come with a "good running" 90 day warrantee. Here in California, a KA24DE goes for 600$ complete and running from a recycler. Cheaper private. I realize thats pricey for some, but this is California. People are insane here.

thats the standard out here in the east, too. But we got those "crazy" junkyard ownerz that sell an engine/transmission set for $225 around Baltimore... thats the best deal i've found over here except that you gotta pull it yourself and get all ****ed up and muddy.

Maybe wait till summer so you just get dusty instead of dirty?

it would take too long to explain it all. So use the search button on the top right of the screen to search for "SR20 swap" or "CA18 swap" etc. whatever you need to know about the words and terms we use that you dont understand.that should explain alot, but you need to use that button often. it will educate you much more than any of us can.
