Hi,

Are there any considerable advantages (as used cars are concerned) of 2009-10 vs. 2006-08 years?
Does the new engine/7 speed combo provide any benefits? How noticeable is real gas mileage difference if any?
Any other pluses? Minuses?
Thanks!

They look better (especially the sport model) and the interior blue/white lighting instead of the orange is much nicer. That's all the reason, I, personally would need.

I had an 07 for 2 years and absolutely loved it. I now have an 09 but for just a week. I fancy the 09 more as follows:
smaller red tail lights
blue-ish white spedo colours
NAV screen colour scheme

I fancy the 07 grille and front bumper more than the 09.

Also, with the 7-sp gear box I do 70 mph at about 5,000 less revs than the 07 M. I haven't noticed the 'wonky' shifting with the 7 spd gear box that other have mentioned.

The rest of the car, incuding the interior and body are nearly identical.

From personal experience I can give you my input!!
-08+ definitely the way to go for all that is technology!
-08+m45 proven more reliable than 06/07 although no major work was done to it :gotme
-09+ m35 is the dual intake engine and 7 speed transmission upgrade! Yes, it's better!!!
*Hard Drive music box(records your cds)
*hard drive Navigation
*factory integrated IPOD
*Lane departure PREVENTION (vs just warning)
*the upgrade blue colored dash and panel lights
*leather is better quality (I know from experience)
*aluminum trim on dash piano keys
*SPORT package :dblthumb:

Thanks! Although Consumer reports rate 06 highest and 09 lowest as a used car summarily - and site a lot of 09 reliability problems (transmission included)
What do you think?

I would add that the 09 M35 takes premium whereas the earlier models I believe you could use regular. All the M45s take premium.

In these studies do they take into account the variances due to less stats? I'm not sure but IMO the 06-08 models looked better from the outside than the newer models and perhaps other people thought the same thing so less were purchased which means less reliability stats and of those received it's likely that people with issues would search to provide these stats than people without issues so in summary and of course this is not fact just my opinion...

06-08 >number of people = >variances in stats
09+ <number of people = <variances in stats

As far as enthusiasts such as us I think we're only less than 1% of the total owners who would actually spend time posting the good and bad.

What kind of real mileage difference between those generations?
Thanks!

Sample size has a real influence on "statistics" without knowing their methodology as to how they came up with their ratings, you can spin stats to look good or bad
if you flipped a coin twice, and got heads both times, you'd assume that heads should come up more often.
if you actually flipped a coin 50,000 times, you'd realize that the probability heads comes up is actually 50%

That's why I like the site truedelta.com - they list how many owners responded with regards to reliability/problems and over how long of a period of time, and specifically what problems the owners had.

OK, now I found something i do NOT like about my 2009 M. It has no CD changer! How on earth can a car with a rear seat theater, reclining rear seats, AFS lighting, rear sun shade, active lane departure prevention, NAV, and god-knows how many other options end up with a single CD player? I have an assortment of data CDs I made for music that allow me about 100 tracs per CD and now I can only have one CD in the player at a time. I went from 600 scrollable tracs to 100.
I assume they reduced the size of the CD player to accomodate the flash drive gizmo that is just under the CD slot. In that case, they should have gone old school and installed a changer in the trunk.
Don't get me wrong, I still love the car, just that sometimes an upgrade can also be a step backward elsewhere.

I understand his frustration. Having CD's with music is much more portable than having to load them onto the harddrive then pull out then next CD etc.

I also see your point 9GB can store 1800 songs at 5MB each.

I guess it boils down to humans don't particularly enjoy change and the associated learning curve. In fact when you are paying so much for a luxury vehicle why should we experience change especially change that is less efficient than previous versions.
