Lexus did it with the ISF vs the IS350 Infiniti had to do something but they missed the mark. I think it was purposeful, the GTR already kills the ISF. The 350 hp V6 from the 370Z could make 400 hp if Infiniti wanted it too but they have to protect the GTR too. Its similar to the Camaro vs the Vette right?
IMO a better move would have been an Infiniti badged GTR with more luxury.
The IPL does offer some nice nice styling and chassis changes vs the standard G37 and the price is right. Not enough different to get more of my money though.
The ISF is at a different price point. As a matter of fact, so is the tire budget--re: the warning label on the new cars sitting on the lot 'these expensive low-profile tires will last approx. 6k-7k miles.)
Anyways, every time a car jumps the next 10K it loses some buyers and exposes a predictable comparison with everything in its purported new class. It wouldn't be much of a surprise to see a direct luxury transition of the GTR in the 90K plus range for Infiniti (they might even call it an "Essence"... which would justify the leap in price) depending on demographics and its impact on predicted volume of production and profitability. Considering what the OPEC oil crisis did to the "muscle cars" of the early 70's (not so coincidentally, the rise of the Japanese sports cars), and today's gas prices, that market is getting modified as we speak and what I'll call "super-hybrids" are emerging to displace our perception of the low performance compromises of the past to what is no less than the awe-inspiring acceleration of vehicles such as the M37h going for approx. 68K. (at ~35 MPG, you have to see a flat + $1.00 bump in present gas prices over 30K miles to break even on a fully loaded "normal" G37) The dealer I bought the IPL from isn't even selling the one in the showroom because they only have one and it will not be reduced in priced when the time comes.
Nonetheless, the IPL has all the options of a very good luxury performance car based upon a race-proven legacy. My reasons for buying it fully loaded are not for the "IPL" logo nor the 18 more ponies that only make themselves known while pushing the car to the point where I make myself known (In fact, I'm thinking about gently lifting the "IPL" off the paint if I can do so without doing any harm.) I think the luxury loaded options are great. The free flow exhaust is a perfect start to putting a TT in it when I decide to void my warranty and spend 10k getting into the ISF, Z06, SS, M, AMG power-band for much less.(I left the GTR out because it's and all-wheel drive supercar). On the other hand, if I want to go 200+ MPH I can jump in the Ovation and do it in "plane sight" of any cop without having to worry about my insurance or those stupid coma-inducing driver's-ed classes.
...alas, the 510 and the pics were before the digital age and a marriage and a half ago.
