I saw several people perform this sort of swap on there skylines when I was in Japan, but I have yet to see anyone transplant a 300ZX transmission to a J30. Is there a major problem with this or has noone attempted it yet? Isint the 300ZX's manual transmission a lot more effecient?

J was not designed for manual transmission. Very expensive mod with the RHD configuration in North America.

im gonna have a ****load of fun with a drill and a saw.

the best part will be cutting the shock tower to fit the master cylinder.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I haven't seen any J30's that really "stand out from the crowd" , have any of you seen anything wild? about the most interesting mod I saw was the stillen headers.

There just isn't a "crowd" to stand out from. The J30 isn't a ricer.

look, I've been living in Japan for the last three years, and until I got back to the states I didin't know what a "ricer" was, now when I mean "stand out from the crowd" I don't mean some big crappy stickers and a pair of reflective taillights with a "super duper weapon type x" carbon fiber hood. I mean a real performance machine. Would owning an Infinity J30 with an RB26DETT make me a ricer? I don't think so. Would it "Stand out from the crowd?" yes.

here's a better question (and maybe I won't get flamed for "being a ricer")

Has anyone did and heavy performance modifications to a J30?I have seen lots of talk of OEM 300zx turbos, but no actual pictures to back up claims. I also wonder if anyone has Installed the VH41DE from the Japanese market equivelint vehicle "Leopard Jour Ferie"

also for the ricer thing:Would you not find it somewhat entertaining to blow some kid in a riced out civic away at the stop ligt in your 4 door mid sized luxury sedan? I would. That's why having 300hp is fun. Is it expensive? yes

I also have lots of money and like to tinker with things...

What I partially mean by "ricer" is that there isn't all that much that can be done to the VG30DE. It's pretty much maxed out OEM. That's not to say one couldn't drop some bucks and get more power from it but dollar/hp ratio would be very high compared to the typical "ricer".

The J weighs 3800 lbs compared to a 300xz na at 3300 lbs. That 500 lb differnce is crucial. Additionally, after comparing power figures from the J's VG30DE and the same motor in a ZX, the J's engine was tuned differently than the lghter car. Less hp and torque. Less agressive cams? Different ECU? Compromises to handle heavier stress on the transmission?

The J is not a stop light sprinter but a mile gobbling, road hugging touring car.

Mayhem installed an after market underdrive (?) flywheel. Exhaust already very good. Intake pretty efficient. VVT. Direct injection. Not much easily done after market mods. The 15 year old design of the VG30DE still rivals performance numbers of the latest high performance V6s in every area except fuel consumption which are relatively higher but this is probably due to weight of the chasis.

oh, im not saying i wanna be a ricer, the only external mods im contemplating are wheels and maybe some hood/bumper mods [not sure on that, the hood is kinda messed up on my j so i might try something]

most of the mods will go unseen. just the way i like it.

once i get my plans and funds in order, im gonna be taking a picture/video documentary of the project.

maybe ill slap dual 6 inch black stripes on it and go rice hunting:D

Couple years ago when I was going through the ads, I came across a J30 for sale at the dealer. When I read the options it had, it mentioned it was a 5 spd. Now, was the J30 ever produced with 5 spds.? When I called the dealer, it was sold. :(

Later...

I highly doubt it.

nope, if the j ever came with a manual transmission, there would be room to mount the clutch master cylinder, and i wouldnt need a torch to get the shifter thru the floor.
