subject rear wheel bearings. Car has roaring in back. Recently purchased new tires. Could it be the tires causing this noise or the bearings. How can you tell? The car is a 2004 Infinity G35

Hi BG - Typically, rear wheel bearing failure is gradual, but it can cause the noise you mention.

Did it begin when the tires were swapped? If so, I'd be suspecting the tires.

With the wheels in the air, grab the top and bottom of the wheel and try to rock it up and down. If there is ANY movement of the wheel (other than turning, of course), then you have a bearing issue. It may be very, very slight (might feel like a light tick, click, or clunk when the wheel moves).

Welcome aboard!

Another thing to consider - did you get an alignment with the new tires installed? If the the roaring came along with a set of new tires, it could be that the old tires were worn based on how far out the alignment was, and the new tires are introducing the roar because they are new and even.

I would definitely also follow the advice of the Hitman. Give it a check and let us know what you find!
