Infiniti reportedly clinic-testing an all-wheel drive wagon

After writing about the forthcoming Dodge Magnum (AW, Nov. 25), an Audi Avantissimo-like wagon shown at a consumer clinic, now comes word of yet another clinic-tested player entering the wagon fold: Infiniti. Our clinic insider reports Nissan’s luxury brand is seriously considering a wagon carrying the G35 or G35X nameplate. If brought to market, we’re told the wagon would have “big tires and plastic cladding as well as all-wheel drive.” Our observer also reported the wagon as Volvo Cross Country/V70-sized, which means it would be much larger than a G35-based wagon, so maybe the G35 nomenclature was a decoy.

Why is Nissan flashing its future before consumer clinics? “At the end they showed us the new FX45 and asked whether we thought the wagon would take away sales from the SUV,” our clinic attendee said.

--- I don't know how everyone else feels about this, but I would love it (providing it looked okay- I don't like the phrase "plastic cladding"). This also means that Infiniti is developing an AWD system. Pretty cool. Now, if I could only get a paddle shifting F1 transmission in a G35 coupe, I'd sell my soul.

It's probably the Stagea wagon from Japan. I've got a brouchure I picked up in Tokyo.

The design is a mix of G35 sedan and Volvo V70 wagon. Same wheels, engine, interior as G35. RWD too.

I think it'll be very successful since SUVs are old news.

looks pretty cool, but just doesn't look like an Infiniti ya know? Would fit good in the Nissan line up though.

How funny! That really is a G35 wagon- right down to the wheels. The face is a mix between Subaru Legacy and the Q. It would need some Infiniti tweaks to make it exciting, rather than just a Japanese Nissan wagon. And the one thing I've always hated about the Volvo XC is those yard-stick taillights. It shows potential though. Thanks for the link Greg.
