What is it with folks who insist on tail-gating?

About a week ago, I was going home from work late in the evening. Very light traffic on 85 South in San Jose, CA, east of Highway 17. I am doing about 70 to 75mph in the middle lane, and this Toyota Avalon comes up and insists on staying just a few feet behind me! I am still babying my recently replaced transmission, so I just get out of his way. Twice! Needless to say, he follows my lane changes and stays on my butt.

So I just start accelerating - not too hard, of course. At 120mph, he finally backs off. I look in my mirror, his car is rocking gently from side to side in the slight cross-wind that day! My Q is handling perfectly normally and gracefully. I drove at that speed for another 3 miles or so to my exit in order to avoid this idiot.

Must be that herd instinct, like elephants trunk to tail.

Some time back, in one of the car magazines, a writer told of an interesting experience with tail-gaters. Sometimes, they are just too dumb to know any better, I suppose!

The writer was being tail-gated. He got annoyed and started to slow down to see if they would go around him. Nope! Eventually, he came to a complete halt on the fast lane of the highway and the car behind him just came to a halt as well and the driver waited. He said that he came to his senses after a few seconds: "What am I doing stopped in the fast lane?" and accelerated and sped off. No clue as to what happened to the idiots behind him.

One of many that I have, but this one is interesting, and short.

Was not in a Nissan product at the time. I had a 92 SAAB 900s 3-door. About 7:30am one Saturday I was on a local highway. Very little traffic, going 100+ in a 55. I come over a rise in the road and a cop is sitting in the median. I notice he was looking down doing something as a blew past him, but I thought I was busted. I move to the right lane ready to pull over but he apparently NEVER saw me! What a break!!

wish i had one of the infinti's today, but alas all i had was a 94 2door tercel. two (i can say with utter confidence) rice boys were revving there motors at each other. one was a old crx and the other was a pretty generic looking prelude. not the last generation but the one before. both looked like they had matching walmart exhaust and that's it. well both are revving at each other making all kinds of ruckous. now remember that i'm not involved in this little race here, but i used it as some experimentation. they both took off and i tried to follow the best i could. believe it or not i had to hit the brakes during the first split second. i guess the tercel launches better...go figure. the prelude consistently pulled on the crx and was about 2 cars ahead when i called it quits.(just got a ticket in the same area for running a red light this morning) lets just say the tercel fell behind the crx slower then the prelude pulled ahead. so i was only about a tad more then a car length behind. gotta say either the tercel is better then i tghougt or that crx is a hamster or two short of a four pack. maybe i'll create the first turbo tercel. :D

So two weeks ago I was on my way back up to college (KU) and I was averaging 115-120mph on I35. About 10 miles outside of Emporia I didn't even notice this cop sitting behind a bridge. Turns out he was taking a piss and saw me coming so he zips up his pants and zaps me at 109. What freakin luck.

But that's not the funniest part. Anyway, he pulls up behind me, walks up to the car and goes "Son, I clocked you doing 109 back there and frankly I have no clue how your car could be going that fast." So one thing lead to another and 5 minutes later we were talking about the possiblity of him buying a Q to use off-duty. I popped the hood and let him check it all out. Eventually, he just told me to keep it down and drive safe though "I know it's probably hard with a ride like that" God I love my Q!!!! :)

That's funny as hell! Nothing like barreling along on I35 with a Q45 :) KS is a terrible place to try not to speed - all of those wide open places. I have a gradma in Moran, Kansas (population 50) that's in the SE corner of Kansas, and then other grandparents in Denver. Unfortunately I've never had the Q out there - usually fly and rent a car. Come to think of it, I've never seen a Q in KS. Mostly American made cars - none of those "damn foreign jobbies" :) It must be fun to have something that's especially unique in your area!

Yeah, it's really hard not to speed in KS. It is so nice to have a 90 Q here because I've seen maybe 5 others across the state. The best part is that as we all know the Q is quite the sleeper. Everyone thinks, "I can kick the **** out of that Maxima" Then whoops!!!! :)

lets bring back this thread back to life because we have lots of new members now so let them now first gen Q is not just a fine machine it is one of the best kick *** sleeper of its time.few dys ago i was coming from work waiting at red light in nyc we do spend half of time of driving waiting at traffic lights.enjoying the new rebuild amps from bose they sound wonderfull.it was late night so both side of road was epmty. In rearview mirror i saw these two cars approching fast from their xenon lights i knew they were newer models.just as they got closer light turned green and bmw x5 flew by me being chased by 2k maxima.by the time they were in middle of next block that light turned red.so they stopped and i stopped behined the bmw and start checking what type of x5 was it .had two tail pipes on each side so it was x5 4.0 and max was 2k because of no clear tail lights.we all had tinted windows nobody can see each other.by that time light turned green and they both took off maxima did little tire spin and off they go upto 30mph max was half car ahead around sixty beemer cought up with it and by 80mph x5 took a car lead and cut in front maxima and we all approched next red light but this time maxima driver had enough he stayed behined the x5.so now my lane was empty and i pulled next to x5 side and debating with myself should i or let it go.2k maxima are fast what if i get spanked too.i turned off music and said to myself what the hell never backed down from a race before so u lose some u win some.even i have jwt tri mode tcu but still decided to put gear in 1st manually so i can hold it at 7500rpm.as light turned green , i took off little slow didn't want no tire spin bmw was slow at start too but around 30mph both v8 monsters woke up under the hood around 6500rpm i hear his engine hitting red line thats what i was waiting for just then i floored it took the rev up to 7500 smaked the lever into 2nd Q jumped like 10ft and put a two car distance on him by that time i was close 90mph now he was in rearview mirror .i saw next red light coming so shut it down and waited for him as soon he pulled next to me i rolled down my passanger side window to ask him how it was.but that arrogent SOB instead of rolling his window down he rev his engine and start power braking.hey two can play the same game i start power braking too that was a mistake when light turned green he took off pretty fast this time and i wasted second or two busy smoking my tires as soon i saw his rearend i realized my mistake i floored the gas paddle and by 60mph i just passed him like he was standing.i think i need more practice with power braking.by this time he had enough at next light he turned right without saying bye.Guess what all this time maxima was right behined me even my right lane was empty but maxima still decided to stay in the back.my story got little long hopefully u guys enjoyed it as i ejoyed this race.

Last night I was heading downtown to meet some friends after a concert. I'm in a little bit of a hurry but set the CC at 75 to make sure that I don't run afoul of the law. The traffic was very light but after a while I come up behind 3 cars that are blocking all three lanes of the expressway going about 65. I move to the left lane and follow thinking that the guy would get the hint. He doesn't so I do a quick one time flash of my brights. The late model Grand Am pulls over and lets me by and I pass him and then pull back into the center lane. No problem, thanks buddy! The traffic is so light that I move to the right lane and continue at 75.

I'm motoring along like this for a couple of minutes when I notice this Grand Am gaining on me in the right lane flashing his brights on and off. I don't like the feel of this so I accelerate to 80 just wanting to put some space between us. He keeps coming. I noticed that there were two guys in this car when I passed and they're most likely goof balls that I don't want to have anything to do with. I want to lose them so I slam the gas, start pulling away from him and get to 125 in like no time at all (my new tires are so damn smooth). He still wants to catch me but can't keep up. The J30t is running beautifully and smooth but the traffic is getting a little busier so I shut her down. I pass a couple of cars on the left and look in the rear view mirror and still this guy still flashing his brights at me but he's way back there. I'm coming to a big interchange so I figure that instead of breakneck speed I'll lose this dude on the interchange. The lights are still back there and I'm down to about 80. The lights keep coming but now they're strobing with a tiny little blue red flash coming from the middle of the windshield.

Crap! I'm in big trouble. Going that fast can get you thrown in jail. The Crown Vic catches up and I signal with my hand that I see him and pull over. That's it, I think. I've really screwed myself.

The cop gets out of the car. He comes up to my window and it's not your run of the mill trooper. He's an older guy in plain clothes. He's says, "Did you know how fast you were going? Over a hundred! I'm coming from a murder investigation and then you blow by me like that? 29 years on the police force and I've seen plenty of crashes. Driving that little car of yours like that will get you killed!" I know that this guy could seriously curb my lifestyle so I'm falling all over myself to give him the answers and attitude that he wants. I tell him I realize that I was being irresponsible and about the guy that was chasing me. He says that he saw him too and "that guy was as crazy as you." It was very lucky for me that he had seen the other A hole chasing me.

He let me go! I was very contrite and courteous. I think he chased me becasue I certainly scared him when I flashed by at probably well over 115! The other car passed him too but probably not as fast which is why I believe he came after me. Man, I was very happy to not get ticketed/thrown in jail and very happy in that by being stopped by this cop I also lost those goof balls.

I smoked the Grand Am but very nearly smoked myself! I was very lucky but the Grand Am guys were probably having a big laugh over my predicament. However, I can live with that because the cop got rid of them for me. I got the J to 125+ and lost the jerks and the manouvers were relatively safe because of the light traffic. All's well that ends well. Still, would have been very embarrassing (not to mention expensive) to end up in jail for that series of events.

On the way home, I had the CC set at 70. Looks like I probably won't see triple digit speeds for at least another year now. :( "Little car." Hmph! But I guess that it is in the scheme of things.

Probably wouldn't have been the right time to say, "Actually, officer, it's a little-known fact that the J30 (by Infiniti) has one of the lowest fatality rates of any car, regardless of EPA classification. But I appreciate your concern for my safety and well-being."

Or you coulda said, "Bet you're glad I slowed down - That Crown Vic was probably doing its best to keep up."

LOL - Glad you didn't get in any trouble. Next time get a badge # and a name and send a thank you card - Cops dig that. :D

Actually, that did cross my mind during his lecture but I was too busy trying to give him the responses that would benefit me the most. ;) It also crossed my mind for the breifest of moments to out run the guy but I do respect the cops as a rule so my better judgement finally took control of me. By the time I had collected my wits enough to do as you suggested, he was already on his way back to his car and waving me to get going. I owe that detective big time. It was like getting busted by the older cop from Law & Order (forget his name). He has more important things on his mind than wasting his time on a dumb *** speeder.

Really glad that he got rid of the Grand Am. Being from Canada originally, sometimes I forget or don't consider that some idiot out there on the roadway might have a gun. Like my wife said to me one day, "You know, this isn't Canada. People have guns." Yikes!

The rev limiter is set at 5000 rpm in top gear yielding an indicated 130 mph. Theoretically, red line (7000 rpm) would give 170 mph! However, some wags here have said that the J30 would probably do 145 mph (actual) realistically with an aftermarket ECU. The J30 has a bit of a reputation for developing lift characteristics at high speeds (90+ mph?). The spoiler on the J30t is functional. It's not there just for its good looks. It's functional and therefore, beautiful.

I bet the numbnuts in the Grand Am are wondering what the hell that "little car" was that just up and walked away from them at 80 mph.

PS Thanks again, Detective, for cutting me a big break and saving me from having to outdrive/deal with the idiots.

Great story! I guess I was the "grand am guys" once in the Q... had a woman piss me off years ago in a Ford Explorer... you know one of those merge over four lanes and get in front of you in the left lane and slow down deals... I smoked her in the center lane, then did my patented pull back to the left lane, completely let off on the accelerator, downshift to 3rd and coast down to whatever they'll stand. When she pulled to the center lane I let her get beside me and when she floored it I did too. We were off up to the low 100s when we came around a curve on 126 going in to downtown (if you can call it that). Traffic was non-existent at 8:00 on a Saturday morning, but way off in the distance I see a silver crown vic in the right lane. I backed off and she kept on going... and my friend in the car said "it's not a cop, I don't see any lights in the back window" - definately no light bar or markings.

Anyway I decided to let her go... she must have passed him going 95 in a 55 - it was ugly - blue lights everywhere! I learned a long time ago not to listen to buddies about cops... got my first ticket from a friend asking "will this thing catch a wheel on wet pavement?" and then later telling me - I thought that looked like a Caprice sitting over there but I didn't think much of it...

I've not read all the posts in this one, but lets just say that I spent more of my 45 minute commute at over 90 than under it for a couple of years.

120 wasn't uncommon, and I tried really hard one day to make my average trip speed fo rthe whole commute over 100mph.

I am a bad boy, and of course this is all purely fictional

/me looks around for internet cops

I had just finished turboing my Sentra SE-R i was out on a cool night running about 8lbs of boost. I was minding my own business when this late 80s 5 series BMW(the ones with the exhaust down the center) pulls up...this car is so loud i can barely think! I was like great im gonna get spanked:). We pull to a light he leaves me out of the hole by about 2 car lengths...mean while im spinning thru 2nd gear, as i grab 3rd i go sailing past him...We both slow down and hes asking me if the cars stock and shaking his head in disbelief...That was the first of many disappointed sports car owners:).

Terry

PS My sentra now has over 150k and consistanly puts down 220whp on a T25 turbo:).

...on the Nissan/Infiniti boards. Your speeding story was strangely like my own. I now have a 97-98 Q45 that is pretty tweaked, but in college I also had a Ford Fiesta like you did. I tweaked that car fairly heavily and it would pull on anything on the road. I had the heads and cylinders bored, stroked, raised the compression to 10:1, dual 42DCOE carbs, etc. and the only way that you could tell that it was "worked on" was the 3 inch turbo muffler out the back, it was lowered a bit, the roll cage, and the big sway bars. Otherwise, it was a plain beige car with nice wheels and tires. The sound was very quiet because of the huge muffler, and you couldn't really hear anything hectic until I stomped on it. My "speed story" was when I was driving back to L.A. from Santa Barbara one day, and a Porsche Turbo 944 and 911 passed me as i was doing a law-abiding 60-70mph. I stepped on it and pulled up next to them and they were looking at me like two bullies sizing up a new kid with glasses. At this stage, by speedo was pegged at 120 (I had a new speedo installed that read 120 vs the stock 75) and I knew by my revs that I had plenty of juice left so I punched it and left them behind like they were standing still. About 5 minutes later I slowed down again and I saw them darting in and out of traffic trying to catch up to me. They pulled up beside me and waved to get my attention. I turned to the guy in the turbo, raised my hand, and flipped him off with a smile and stepped on it again. As I again slowed down to let them catch up, I could see them coming up behind me when suddenly a HUGE cloud of billowing white smoke came out from under the 944's hood as he tried to pull over. He probably blew a turbo or something. What great memories that lil ol Fiesta gave me. Plus, it got 28-30 mpg! The best car that Ford ever imported. Great memories...

Mine was a 78 - orange too. But I did not have an Elan engine. How did you manage that?

My best speeding story was in my 1976 Vega Wagon.

My grandfather had it painted Candy Appple Red, tinted the windows, and had put boat trailer tires on it. They were speed and weight rated, but had a rope pattern in the white walls.

Well, the funny part is the GA State Trooper walking up to the car literally crying he was laughing so hard. Apparently, he had clocked me at 92mph while sitting off behind a bill board. By the time he walked up the side of the car to me, he was convinced there was no judge in the world that would believe a bone stock Vega could break 70. He said he struggled with the idea of me pushing a SBC thru that skinny little tail pipe, but when he saw the white walls he knew there was no way I was going that fast.
