Infiniti Service: Dealer vs other

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

I'm scheduled to do the 15k service for my Ex 35. They are charging 317 for factory recommended maintenance! I have no idea why it's so expensive.
Do you guys always service your cars at the dealer? Do you pick and choose what maintenance you want? How does it work?
Maybe I'm too poor to own an infiniti after all. :gotme

Interesting. I just had my third oil change at 18k (I know, I know some folks it should be done every 3k, but I go with Schedule B) and the dealership never even mentioned the 15k service. It is oil/filter/tire rotation on either shedule, but Sched. A adds changing brake fluid. I don't recall EVER changing brake fluid in a car unless doing a brake overhaul, so that ain't happening unless I find a compelling reason to do it. The interior filter is not a mechanical part, so if it don't stink, why change it? I think everything else is an inspection item. Really? At 15k what is likely to go wrong that you wouldn't know about due to malfunction or isn't already checked by the free "multi-point inspection"? Following my oil change and free inspection the service guy said everything checked out fine as would be expected at 18k. Dealers make a lot of petrodollars by pushing for high priced inspection services that only make sense for the uber-cautious. You can pick and choose what you want them to do, or alternately, find a trusty independent mechanic who will do the same work for less. These should be very reliable vehicles, don't let them trade on your anxiety.

You will find the MANUFACTURER recommended maintenance in your owners manual, it's the only one you need to follow. If you have money to throw away, then follow the DEALER recommended maintenance schedule. It's the one that's very nicely printed on a separate, high gloss, color brochure ;) .

In the four years we've had our EX35, I only had the Dealer do essential Repairs and Oil-changes.

As for all the other over-priced crap they wanted to do, I refused my consent.

Once, they wanted to charge me 90 Bucks to do an Engine Flush. 90 Bucks to pour some crap into the Engine and let it run for 5 minutes. No thanks.

Now that the Warranty is over, I'm doing my own Oil-changes.

We have 40,000 Km's on our 08 EX35.

Steven's Creek Infiniti gave me the service slip for the maintenance done on another car and swapped mine - I know not where back in 2009.

That ended my romance with their service dept. Sales is nice there.

I currently go somewhere else on the peninsula. The opposite is true there - better service worse sales staff.

I always pick and chose what I want done. Been doing private synthetic oil changes since 20k at 44k now.
