Car: Infiniti J30

Post

Hello. I would like some advise as to the price I should ask for a 93' Infinti J30. Though it has run very well with few problems for 4 years the transmission seems to have failed and the price to fix it exceeds its value. When you first drive it it rides ok, until the transmission fails and the car stops dead in the middle of the street and wont go anywhere at all. Sometimes if you turn it off and turn it back on the transmission goes again for a little while but still stops and leaves you hanging.

As such my intensions are to sell the J30 as a junk car. Since I have no clue about any of this, I wonder what is a decent asking price for this car. It has slight cosmetic works that needs to be done on the outside, the seats are fairly worn, suspension needs work and the transmission of course. Highlights are that the steering system was recently replaced, tires are pretty new and have great tred, and engine runs great. Any advice would be apreciated.

What you describe is a plugged transmission filter, you should consider a cheap repair attempt before selling it off as dead.
If you are willing to spend $30-$40 bux + willingness to get under the car and dirty and a afternoon you may get another month or even another year out of your car.
All you need is a couple basic tools to drain (and save the trans fluid as you are experimenting on the cheapest way to see if I am right) then change the filter.

I agree.
The filter replacement is VERY easy.
New filter and Gasket and a hour at the most.

Well I cant seem to send messages. But WingFeather and J30tChumpCar, I live in central Virginia and would be happy to sell the car. I'm mechanically retarded and dead broke. Another week to a year seems to not be worth it. I just wanted you guys opinion. I didnt pay that much for the car and it lasted a good 5 years, im not expectiong much more than that. It has a few scrapes, paint has faided a little and the interior seats are in poor condition. The engine runs great. Let me know.

Too far away sorry.
BUT
I deal with cars all day long, I understand your not mechanical but really see your situation as potentially very simple and rewarding to your efforts. We can talk you through this simple procedure for a revised figure of $10 or less, potentially even free to $3 depending on how well things go, you would need only 2 or 3 tools, if nothing else you could +double the resale value as junk (around here)will only garner $300
You may ask how I can change the numbers, the J30 has a simple to access transmission filter witch if memory serves is just a fine metal cleanable screen, coupled with the thoughtfulness of Infiniti to put a drain plug in the transmission, if you were to drain and save the fluid, remove the ring of bolts holding the pan on, remove & clean the filter the worst needed would be a tube of sealer to repair (not replace or overwhelm) the existing pan gasket and a possibly a quart of fluid depending on amount lost, this can be done!
