And a new BMW transmission will cost about that. Always useful to compare Ebay engine, transmission, parts prices to understand how much more European parts prices are vs economical Japanese.

If you want cheap prices and cheap parts buy American until Delphi renegotiates its prices after Bankruptcy.

BMW parts prices arent that bad at all, especially the E34. They're cheaper in many cases. The difference between German and Japanese parts costs is horribly exaggerated.

True. It's just the labor on certain engines that is the pita... but then again I do drive a Q45

I tihnk if you compared average dealership prices between say a 94 540 and a 94 Q45 itd be a close comparison, but the bimmer parts more expensive.

Seesm the parts that fail often are expensive and the parts that dont fail are cheap.

With non-dealer online sources like Pelican and Bavarian, its the same as or cheaper than Scottsdale.

I would bet part of the price increase is due to higher transportation costs due to fuel prices increases being passed on from suppliers.

I just ordered an upper front susp. link. It went up from $94 to $99.5% or so increase there.

Last April 1st the price of OEM struts for the G50 about doubled ... a 100% increase! The price increases are not spread evenly across all parts.

By now I would expect that Nissan had to order a new production run of oem shocks for replacements, as what ever was made extra in 1989 and 1993 was probably exhausted........empty warehouses in Japan.

What do you think inflation has been in the last 17 and 13 years..

36% in dollars plus the yen depreciation is 20% so 56% plus dealer markup on cost ~~100%. Sounds normal to me.

I'm sure the production cost are higher as the number of shocks made were fewer than needed for a new car production plus spares.

I went to order a water pump: $112 and the Tension Rod bushings: $25 each. Seems higher then I expected. Water pump is $80 at Advance auto. Can I buy the bushings other then the dealer? I'm getting tired of the urethane bushings since the ride is just too hard.

There are two other things:1. The G50 president went out of production in '02, so now even those cheap mechanical parts are depleted.

2. This is bad news - ask the Z32 guys. Nissan loves to increase the price of a part they are about to discontinue. Usually they increase it by 20% or so, then it's gone a year later.

YEP! I'm surprised that they still stock parts for 90-93 luckily the 94-96 used nearly/or identical suspension/rotors/pads/transmission/shaft.

Why I have a spare room full of personal parts.

Just swapped out my spare tire for a 96 version [at least it's 6 years newer].

After market water pump? Too late it's already in the car. Lifetime warranty. Is there a problem with them?

Aftermarket water pumps tend to burst spontaneously (I've seen it happen, crazy stuff) or bearings will fail early on. Some brands are better than others.

A shop put an aftermarket pump in my last Q and it has, so far, gone 40,000 miles and 3 years. However, thats not exactly a long time.

Its not a hard part to install anyway so if its already in, don't let it keep you up at night. Just make sure your AAA membership is current.

Aftermarket impellers and bearings tend to be the cheapest the aftermarkdet rebuilder can find because everyone at Autozone and Pep Boys is a price point buyer.
