Alfonso Albaisa, who is currently the executive design director for the Japanese automaker, is looking to change that if the above sketch is any sign. Unfortunately, as with all leaks like this, very little details are presented but one thing is clear: Infiniti wants to have a flagship model and it could be coming soon.

Currently at the top of Infiniti’s model range is its M models, which will be renamed to the Q70 when the next-generation of the sedan is introduced. That said, this sketch of a larger flagship model with a long wheelbase, larger wheels and massive front grille points toward what would presumably be called the Q90.

Past reports have suggested Infiniti is indeed exploring the idea of a new top-tier sedan and brand boss Johan de Nysschen even went so far as to say it wouldn’t be conventional like the 7 Series or S-Class. That said, a swoopy coupe-style model similar to the A7, Mercedes CLS or the sketch above, certainly fits the bill.

The goofy C-pillar kink makes a bit more sense on a longer wheelbase.

Otherwise, meh.

I'm pretty sure this will be a pretty long-wheelbased car. Think Jag XJ.

Looks like a sleek donk. The wheels in the drawing look like 30's. That said, it's hard to draw much of a conclusion from a such a drawing. It looks promising, but we'll see.

I don't see how a flagship luxury car can possibly matter without a V8.

I'd accept a straight 8.

HAHAHAHA, that EXACTLY what came to my mind when I looked it over. Also saw 3 donks this weekend.

And meanwhile, in the land of people building cars I actually want to drive:

I wouldn't touch a normal MB with a ten mile pole. Throw in a diesel V6 where there should be a gasoline V12 or boosted V8 and I've completely lost interest.

Infiniti needs a true executive sedan. This could be it. They need a 7 series fighter and they need a true luxury sport lineup.

Audi has the S-Line, Mercedes has AMG, BMW has M, Lexus has F/F Sport, Cadillac has V.

Infiniti needs an identity. I think the Q50 is a great start. I hope they continue down this path, but they absolutely need something that will thrash an M3 in Forza. They need a 7 series fighter to show up on an episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians.

Wait... you mean to tell me that Infiniti's IPL division isn't on par with BMW's M division?

Well, I for one am just shocked.

I agree though. Having a mildly (and I stress mildly) hopped up version of the same engine that goes into the base version shouldn't be considered to be a performance line, no matter how many body kits and stickers you put on the car... especially for the price premium they charge for the IPL.

You don't necessarily have to do what the Germans do either (build an engine specific for that hopped up version). You could take a page out of the book of American Hot Rodding and just throw the direct injected 5.6 V8 from the QX56 in there.

Johan de Nysschen wrote:The Porsche Panamera luxury sport sedan is the inspiration for the upcoming Infiniti flagship sedan. What we don't need is another car like an (Mercedes-Benz) S-Class or a (BMW) 7 Series. I think that market is saturated.

Infiniti is going to embark on a direction where we are provocative, where we are very sensual and seductive in terms of brand character, and that will be expressed in cars as well. These kind of conservative captains of industry flagship sedans don't fit that mold very well.
Preliminary development work is said to be underway on Infiniti's flagship sedan — which remains unnamed — and production is expected to begin in 2017 or 2018.

I shouldn't have to google "Infiniti IPL" to know what the hell it is. M, AMG, V, and the F lines I have heard of as performance lines. Infiniti needs better marketing.
