1991 infiniti m30 hesitates at low rpm and when transmission up-shifts causing high engine rpm to drop to lower rpm's (but the rpms keep dropping to 300-400 until the computer corrects. but can sometimes get bad enough to intake backfire.) anyway my question is even though i've set the initial timing to 15deg btc with a timing light, my diagnostic programs (connected w/cable and laptop) gives a 55 deg btc reading at idle. (goes up to 80 deg btc with revolution to 2000+ rpms. ) is 55btc normal reading for the car's computer? engine rpms gives trouble in neutral gear no load with slight gas pedal push. i have to hit gas pedal 1/2 throttle or more to take off (fast) decently. (or very lightly and hold until cruiseing up to speed) this all started a day after racing hard across a bridge. new plugs, cables, rotor, cap (yes autozone) and time adjust helped for about 3 weeks. timing belt replaced also. problem just came back again worse. today was the frist time the car hesitated to start (kind of double started in a 1/2 second interval) otherwise starts and idles good. have the car 17mos now, ran good mostly except for only getting 10mpg. replaced oxygen sensor early on after getting the car but no difference in performance. no engine check lights. code 55 every time. exhaust smells kind of chemically. k & n air filter gave a rotton egg smell after heavy throttle racing, but returned to normal afterwards. maf, throttle sensor, injection timing all within service manual specs. plug #6 was black with carbon deposit. all others white. should i mess with taking out the distributor and turning it to try and get a 15btc? or can it only be installed one way?

I believe the 55BTDC is a glitch in the diagnostic software. We have seen it in all of the DIY Consult-like software packages.

Just subtract 40 from value =15idle >40 BTDC at low load 2000 cruise

-----yeah thanks. mostt likely just a software glitch that doesn't really affect the car's performance. i was just wondering if i messed with the distributor if the car would run better. but trying to adjust it that far probably would of been hell on the car.

well it's july 2011, and i found out i was setting the timing all wrong. facing the engine from the front of the car, the timing marks on the wheel |||||| not sure how many. i was assuming the left mark >|||||| was 0* degrees. thus the third line being 15*btdc. wrong wrong wrong. 4years later and i am to use the last line ||||||< . this is 0*degrees. hot dam#. car would run too hot every summer. well i removed the plastic under protector and replaced with some chicken cage wire so i could get more air thru engine bay. that and correct timing and hoping for the best. heat wave just left. have to wait couple a days for hot weather testing. but needle stayed just above middle with ac on for 40 min drive. usually right at about 30minutes of driving it goes high, and forget about using ac.

The road shield actually helps with cooling, by foring the air that goes through the radiator to exit at the rear of the engine bay. By removing it it gets blown straight down and then sucked back into the front of the radiator while sitting still in traffic.
