Is it just me or does anyone else think the horn on the M is really low. I think is should be louder. Has anyone changed their horn, does anyone know if we can get a louder horn, if someone had done it what horn did you use and do you have a write up?

Thanks in advance

I feel the same way. I thought of doing this a couple years ago, but didnt bother. If you do it, I'd add a switch inside to switch it back, because it's illegal in NY and you dont want a bored cop hastling you...especially in Manhattan.

It's illegal to get a horn as loud as a like suburban or a large SUV? I can see if I do an air horn but I wouldn't think something in comparison to like a large vehicle would be illegal

Pffft. That's a law in NY? They can suck it - I'd add in an aftermarket horn, actuated by the original horn button, and use it for emergencies only.

(There's a novel concept for NYers, who seem to use their horn more than they use their goddam blinker).

I've replace the horn on every car I own with a Stebel Nautilus. You can get them on Amazon here: http://www.amazon.com/Stebel-Nautilus-U ... B00CMX20H4

I've replaced mine with these. Much louder than the stocks and are made in Japan so I don't worry about the quality. One is located in front of the front driver wheel, you'd have to remove the wheel liner. The other horn is located behind the grill, which would need to be removed. You would need to reuse one of the brackets but otherwise, very easy plug and play swap.

Funny and timely... My girlfriend and her daughter clown my car's horn!! They think it should be ''beefier''!

Haha. I was going to suggest a train horn, but BEEFY you say? - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pBwtbFsxJA. .
Check on youtube for other ideas, but be careful. 'tis a slippery slope out there

To the OP, IIRC Hella and PIIA horns have replaced many OEM Nissan (speaking for 5.5 gen Maximas especially) horns for those who got tired of the factory sound.I also think some models like the i35 came with PIAA horns...or some other brand that was definitely pretty good. Take my advice with a grain of salt because in all honestly, I can't remember the last time I heard a horn blaring aside from the little door lock chirp.
I reckon in the big city y'all use your horns as frequently as your turn signals, huh? :chuckle: :chuckle:

No, I dont mean slight upgrade of the horn in it of itself, I mean like the horns on the tow trucks running around in NYC, I believe they are air horns but I dont know. Anytime someone talks about upgrading horns, that's what i invision....that's what I was planning.

I didnt know we had two horns. Do you have a vid of how loud the horn is now? I'll search for myself when I'm able to, but if you have it it'll be great to hear the difference.

A vid won't really help - Too many variables.

Look at the dB level - HUGE difference between stock and aftermarket (see the one I posted).

Also, if you want to go cheap, hit a junkyard and grab a set of horns off a 80's Buick / Olds / Pontiac / Cadillac. Loud, and a great, commanding tone.

I don't have a video of the difference but there are other videos online you can reference. I can say that our stock horns sound a bit muffled and sometimes I think people can't even hear them. Now other cars actually react when the horn is used. ;)

The tone is still the same, I would describe it as more amplified compared to the stock horns.

Ok, i looked at the one you posted, as well as others. There seems to be a big problem with these things failing after a few months to 2 years. Is this the norm with aftermarket horns? Because ive never had a car where the oem horns failed...not to say oem horns never fail, but my readings on this dont really put them in a positive light for longevity.

Thanks, I don't know why I didn't think to look in the faq. This is exactly what I was trying to do, but couldn't get the tabs to squeeze and release...using needle nose pliers. I'll try the screw driver. It really sucks that I have to take off the wheel to change one of the horns... that's ludicrous. I will probably send the horn back, wait until spring then buy it again (just in case after I put it b on I don't like it I can just return it)...I'm not going through all of that in 40'.
