When I bought my 93 J30, the previous owner had already replaced the Bose head unit with a Sony "high power" deck driving the factory Bose speakers. At first I thought the rears were blown, but after cutting the bass boost, the speakers don't sound blown, just bad ;) Also, I think that maybe they just hooked up the Sony to the bose amps without reducing the signal level, which may be the cause of the distortion that I was experiencing. It gets loud fast when barely touching the volume.

I would like to replace the speakers with 5x7s in the front doors and 6x9s in the rear deck using the Sony power for now. Will I be able to use the existing speaker wire (assuming it's the Bose wiring) until I add an amp? At that point I would totally rewire everything, but I'm looking for bolt-in convenience now. Also, does anyone know the mounting depth for the front doors? Will I be able to mount new 6x9s in the rear deck without modification and using the factory grills?

Any suggestions?

front doors,2.75 and window will work, but you have to have a 3/4" baffle.anything but a round speaker will image horible.can i ask why you want none round speakers.i can see the back deck, but .lets see if i can rember--the bose might be at 1.5 ohms..you dont have to spend alotn to make it much nicer.at least swap out bose.and rewire.6x9 should go right in the back.im not one to tell you how to fanagle it.all or nothin

Thanks for responding, Diamond. I know that the factory speakers are 5x7 so that was the size that I was going for initially, probably a plate setup instead of an oval 5x7. Audiobahn makes a 5x7 plate set up (with round components) that might work well., or maybe the Infinity Kappa 4x6s would be better.

Round speakers would probably increase my options though. What size round speakers would fit? Would Infinity 6.5" Kappas fit or would I have to go smaller?

Front door is not a 5x7, maybe a 5 1/4? I think its smaller though, maybe a 4 inch.

Look at the picture:

You're going to have to modify anyway, so why not go with a 6.5, using the plate as a templet for an MDF mounting plate.

You are right, that is definitely not a 5x7. I kept seeing people talk about 4" speakers, but in the speaker size post thread in this forum it is listed as 5x7. I guess that should be updated. The only other thing I can think of is that maybe the speaker size changed in 94 when they added the tweeters in the pillars. I have a 93

So it looks like that whole black plate is the bose unit with amplifier. Sounds like an MDF plate with a 6.5 coax or component set would be the way to go.

I'd go with a component and try to find a 94+ in your interior color being parted for the a-pillar trim so you can use the stock location for the tweets. Alternatively you can mount the tweeters on the sail panel if you dont care about that.

Good suggestion...barring that, I will put in some coaxs for now, it is, after all, "technically" the wife's car and my Tundra currently needs some CDTs :icesangel She will, in time understand the need for an amp and sub, however :D

If you are thinking CDTs for the J, know that the chances that you can fit them w/o modification to the door panel isn't good. I haven't measured but from all I've gathered they have to much depth, at almost three inches, to clear the window even using the thickest mdf possible while allowing the door panel to seat correctly.

I really wanted the CL-61s, but I am still looking. For now I am really satisfied w/ the front stage since changing out the Clarion/Bose unit for a Nakamichi. I'm not sure if the cleaner sound (particularly midbass) on the comps is from turning up the gains w/ the Bose interface or from the processor in the Nak (I'd think the former) - but the processing difference is clear as well.

At this point my first priority has become a sub.

Yeah, I'm probably going to let the front speakers go for a little while until I get that all figured out. The rears are buzzing so that will be first priority. Subs are cool though.
