I have a 2002 i35. I put in a HU from a 2000 i30.

The Good:The sound from the ipod is perfect! When the car is turned off the ipod pauses. When the car is turned on the ipod resumes play.

The Bad:I have lost steering wheel controls. I am thinking maybe I will regain the steering wheel controls if I install a HU from a 2001 i30 as this year had steering wheel controls. However the 2001 did not have the gas mileage/outside temperature cycle button on the steering wheel. So maybe this will not get restored. Anyone know about this?

Summary:I would recommend swapping the 2002-2004 HU with a 2001 HU if you want to hook up your ipod and have a direct connection. Not the direct FM but an actual line level signal like a CD changer connected to the Aux input.

I am using the USA Spec adapter. However my radio is from a 2000. I have ordered a 2001 radio so that I can get the steering wheel controls back. Can you use your trip button on the steering wheel?

edit: I see you have a 2001. I don't think there is a trip button on that model.

I have a Bose hu from an '01 Max. Don't know if it's the same one as the Infinity. It's available if it works for you, let me know.

UPDATE

I hooked up the 2001 HU and the steering wheel controls still don't work.

I have an 03 I35 and was told that the only way I can get my Ipod to work is if I swap with an older HU as you stated. Over on Maxima.org I was told that some guys are running the HU out of the same year Pathfinder that only had the single indash CD. I have not tried this as I can not see spending that sort of money on another stock HU so I am planning to just get an aftermarket hu, lose the steering controls and have a much better, buildable system.

Bad: It will cost about 150-200 to have the hu installed as they are going to have to mod a maxima trim kit to fit and cover all gaps!

Good: I am told that they will be able to have all stock speakers work the same way which will allow time for money to fund the rest of the upgrades!!!

SER,I have a hard time believing there is no dash kit that will fit a standard aftermarket head unit for your I35. Did you check with Crutchfield? When I bought my last hu I got the dash kit and the wiring harness free with it. Depends on the pricing of the unit there, but at the time they had the lowest price and included the free install kit and very detailed instructions. I would never pay some monkey to work on my car stereo. Never know what kind of corners they are going to cut, especially if there are modifying a dash kit that doesn't fit the hu/car.

I have an '03 I35 and have encountered an strange problem resulting from the swap of the stock in dash changer (CR290) to an '01 Head unit(CNB28). When I installed the '01 Head unit and connected the USA Spec iPod adapter in my driveway everything sounded great, so I mounted the adapter, HU, replaced all the trim now as soon as the vehicle starts to move the volume increases from it's current level to maximum rather quickly. I have also lost the use of the steering wheel controls which is an acceptable compromise, but I wonder if the car is sending the SVC to the Head unit which causes the volume to increase. Any ideas, suggestions, etc. Thanks.

you must not know much about our cars, they DO NOT make an aftermarket kit for the i30 or i35 you have to fabricate one using maxima face plates. I have been installing for yrs and have yet to see an aftermarket kit for these cars. for your steering wheel controls the adapter may not work with your electrical system in that car even if the radio is an 01
