I have a 97 i30. I needed to replace the driver side front axel. I went to the local parts store and bought a new axel for a a/t car with out liited slip. I took out the old shaft and put it on the bench next to the new one. It seemed to match up so I installed it. I took the car for a ride and under hard acceleration I know have BAD torque steer to the point that it is dangerous. ( I am not intimidated by it as I race g.m. muscle cars but it is bad). My question is could I have the limited slip on my car and maybe I put the wrong axel in?? Does anybody know the difference in the two axels?? I will be going back to the shop today to check the limited slip (it was late last night when I finished). Has anyone else ever had this problem when only replacing one axel? I drive this car 200 miles round trip a day and I drive it hard and never felt more then the light torque steer under hard acceleration. I have 175,000 on the clock and never had any real problems.....Matt

Common problem with untrained.......you must use the correct half shaft.....hopefully you haven't destroyed the VSLD.Think of it as a learning experience.

How do you know it is the wrong shaft...maybe some insight instead of jabs would go a long way in helping people, not bashing them. I am not untrained. I work on and own some 8 sec cars. I inspected the shaft and it was the same length and had the same spline count as the old one. Info in this case would be better then your mouth. I came here because I heard there was good info not big MOUTHS. YOU really HELPED super moderator. What a joke

How about telling me some different axel lengths and possible spline counts. Obviously the Right shaft has to be used. Some real world experience would be good not some "magazine mechanic" statements.

Usually, you can give your VIN number to the Infiniti dealership, and get the right part.

I don't trust the local auto parts store for important parts like half shafts. 90% of the ones I have bought over the yeras for Hondas and Nissans were crap, and didn't last. 100% of the struts I ahve bought at these places failed within the first month. There is nothing more frustrating than doing the labor twice because of inferior parts. OEM parts are not that much more, and are well worth the extra cost.

Thank you for the heads up. I almost never go to the parts store. except for the usual oil/preventive maint. stuff. Most of my parts are bought through jegs, summit and my local machine shop. This car has been so good I have not had to buy anything other then maintnence stuff. The shaft was not even shot but it was on it's way (slight click in turns). I was thinking the dealer but did not want to get robbed. Thanks again for your help. I will give them shot....Matt

What am I missing, the parts place told you it was not for a VLSD car yet you chose to try it anyway and it didn't workout. Sure you are angry at wasting your time.

Definitely hit up Joe for a new shaft..... Ive found that many times the prices from Joe for OEM (good) parts are CHEAPER than the aftermarket (BAD) replacement parts... For instance, and air filter for the Q is $7 from joe, but about 15 from the zone...

All almost 97 I30 had VLSD [some how a few NON I30t got it on assembly line], in 1998 it was 100% VSLD..........we have run into similar situations in past where the almost 1" difference in length caused the exact problem you mentioned. Why we order parts by VIN number.

Always recommended, especially over the internet, but necessary even if local.
