Tomorrow I'll be heading out to the City of Angeles to give the newest Infiniti model a top down cruise. Although it's too late to solcit any questions here, look for another First Drive article in our upcoming issue. Remember, the last time I drove a 'vert, my passenger (and fellow Nissan Sport staffer) said I "whipped his head around too much"! Such are the hazards of enthusiastic top-down motoring!

The G37 vert looks good with the top up or down! You'll be seeing more of them on California highways as production gets ramped up.

We had a "slow drive" and photo event with a 'vert before others had a chance to do anything with it. Caused a bit of a stir which required the article to be removed for a couple weeks.

Seems pretty decent. I'll have to drive one to compare it to my coupe at some point.

Good stuff. Infiniti is pretty sensitive about photos or driving impressions being released before the embargo is up. Do you know if the G37 'vert you drove was a pre-production model?

Unfortunately it was not I. Then again, it may be fortunate for the car as I'm sure I would have had a hard time keeping it under 20mph as they requested

Thanks for the link. Interesting reading and it even mentions that particular G37 'vert was a PT unit "destined for the crusher" afterwards. I think most G pilots are going to like this car. They should start trickling into Infiniti dealer lots by the end of June.

Yeah. Would be nice if Infiniti gave us the car so we can mod the hell out of it and keep it as a track queen

The G37 convertible is pretty fun. Since they hit the dealers for the mass market release a few weeks ago we have seen about 10 come through my service department. Three of which were the Bloomingdales Premium edition. Red leather? Yes it works perfectly. The AC and audio technology designed specifically for the convertible works flawlessly.

In the event of an incident with the top there is not really anything the owner can do about it, but operation through the 42 steps of motion is quick and artistically smooth. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Npg0z3eh3p4We shot that video at work with a cell camera so it is not the greatest quality but it all happens within the 30 second time allotment for a cell phone. In the above video you can see some of the 1 piece headliner that this car uses. If any of you have driven or looked at the roof panels of other hardtop convertibles there is usually a distinct separation of plates. When the top is up on the G37 it is pretty hard to tell from the inside that the top can quickly fold into the trunk. Also the rear parcel shelf has several position sensors, motors to operate it on two planes and the ability to get out of everythings way with no input from the driver other than pressing the button.

Driving the G37 there are a few differences that are immediately aparent to those who have driven the G37 coupe mainly the lack of a roof and the impressive sound of the stereo, as the exhaust is quieted a little. Stability is surprising for the size and heft of this open top vehicle. It feels very solid on uneven terrain even at speed.

With all the frame reinforcements, suspension upgrades, and mechanically operating components only 500lbs is added to the gross vehicle weight. That is still a pretty decent amount but the VQ37 can handle it well. I am waiting to see the 6 speed manual version but the 7 speed auto still makes for a very fun ride.

The only thing that I do not like about the car is the RC car looking rubber whip antenna. However that can be removed and replaced with the rear spoiler option for this car.
