The dash unit controls so many things in that car that it would be really difficult and almost silly to replace. Instead, I suggest integrating with that system (using the factory head) and replacing the speakers and adding amps/subs.
The fronts should be replaced with a 6.5inch woofer and whatever size tweeter component set.
The 5.25 woofers could just be left there and disconnected or taken out.The rears could also be the same component set, however coaxial speakers will work as well. The center tweeter can be left in place or taken out (will not be active after your new system is installed). The D-Pillars have 2.5 inch tweeters. You could install a set of tweeters here. The sub size is up to you. This install is not easy, is very involved, and not cheap. Take it only to a high end shop.
sizes are as follows
Dash - Left, Center, and Right 2.5 tweeters (one in each location)F. Door 6.5R. Door 6.5D-Pillars - 2.5 tweeters (one on each side)Under Cargo Floor - 5.25 woofers
If I had my way, I would install the Dynaudio System 340 in the front. The woofer would go in the door, the 2.5 tweeter would be retrofitted to fit the 3inch tweeter/mid, and then the 1 inch tweeter would be custom fit for best imaging somewhere in the doors.
The D-Pillars would have attenuated Dynaudio (matching the System 340) tweeters to give a sense of space.
The rear would have the Dynaudio System 240MkII which would match the fronts.
The Subs would be the Dynaudio MW190s (12 inch).
The amps would be Precision Power. I would use...Front - PCX-2200 (2 channel 200w x 2)Rear and auxillary tweeters - PCX-480 (4 channel 80w x 4)Subs - PCX-2200 (bridged to 1 channel, 800w x 1)
Damn that would be so smooth.
