Hi, I am an 1995 j30 and wondering if anyone experienced power lock problems with their car. Currently the power lock on the driver side won't open. I cannot open the driver side door at all. Not manually, electrically, from the inside or out. How can I go about in fixing this problem. I've read elsewhere that this power lock issue is fairly common amongst J30.

My mechanic said that since he can't open the door at all, we would have to break open the door panel from the insdie. I've spent a lot on the car already and really in no position financially to spend much more. Is it something I can do myself? Is there a manual that shows you how to open and fix it yourself. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Quay

I've read posts that describe probably doing a lot of damage in order to open a stuck driver side door such as yours, and when the problem is mechanical as opposed to electrical (door lock timer module solder joints) related.

Perhaps you can locate a J30 at a local pick 'n' pull with a door to open up in order to better understand things? I suppose you also have your somewhat similar passenger side door to work with.

Without having looked at the car at all; would removing a front fender allow you to get at the door hinges and would that do any good anyhow, or do you need to have the door open to get at several of the fender bolts? Have you contacted a body shop, AAA, a locksmith or a dealer (auto)?

Let us know your solution.

I had this exact same problem, and no, I did not have to do much damage to fix it... or at least be able to open the driver side door. For a week, I crawled over my console through the passenger side door until a post on the forums led me to believe that my Door Lock Timer was malfunctioning. Luckily, the door lock timer is located under the dash on the driver's side.

Try disconnecting the door lock timer, and the use your key to unlock the door while the car is off. It worked for me. I'm currently looking for a new door lock timer, but I have been driving with it disconnected and have not had any problems.

Now in my case, the power locks seemed to work, and would move to the open position, yet the door wouldn't budge. If you're having a similar experience, just try disconnecting the door lock timer. It won't cost you a cent to try. Good luck.

Nice job Yoda. That is the exact PDF I referenced. I was going to link it, but I didn't have time the first time I posted.

with[lost]in, the timer isn't really that difficult to locate. The PDF is a pretty accurate depiction. As you lay on your back looking up under the dash, the timer will be to the left of the steering column.

In my case, my car alarm kept going off for no reason, and when the alarm was going off, the door lock timer would actually click similar to the clicking sound of the emergency flashers. Have you had any problems with your car security system? As the PDF suggests, a faulty door lock timer will often contribute to this and that would be another clue for you that your door lock timer is bad.

Good luck man, let us know what you find.

My '95 J30 locks are driving me crazy. The passenger lock stayed locked and would not open with key or power.(The lock-lever with the red paint on it would swing 1/2 way to "open"position then immediately slam back to the "locked" position).

Somebody on this site said to hit the door hard with your palm:Facing the outside of the door, you want to hit the area that is between the handle and the gap that separates front & rear doors.

It worked. Three times. The same malfunction happened to both doors.I am grateful for the solution ( )But it's probably going to happen again. That's bad.

Help:Now that I seem to have identified this, is there a particular part that should be replaced? I own a junked 96 whose locks work perfect & smooth.

What do you say folks?

I really appreciate the help with locating the door lock timer but I took a look under the dash and not sure exactly which one it is and when I do find it what do I do? I am guessing just pull the connection out of its shell, correct? Sorry for sounding you know what, but do not want to pull the wrong thing. Can you be a little more specific? Thanks very much

Here's a photo of the outer case of what you are after. It has black female openings for one or two attaching connectors on the back and you can remove it either along with or without a small metal mounting bracket. It's probably just slightly larger than a pack of cigarettes (I don't smoke).

I believe the slightly later/improved version has a blue label on it and both caution against dropping them.

Thanks Gerry for the great picture. My J30 is a 1997 and when looking I do not remember seeing a gray box like in the pic but do think I saw a blue one. I will take a pic of the underneath and post it just to make sure if ok with you. Night time so will do it first thing in the morning. Thanks again.

Sorry for delay in getting you this. Mother had a stroke so been a little crazy around here. This is the picture I took under the dash next to steering column. I am guessing the gray box is it. The black line going into it would be taken out correct? Thanks for your help.

I'm not sure that I see it in your photo. What year is your J30?

Mine comes out along either by disconnecting maybe two connectors and unscrewing a small bracket or by gently prying/popping it off of the bracket.

I may be under the dash of my '93 this weekend trying to silence a dash rattle and locating the consult connector. I'll try to take/post some photos.

The consult connector will be Grey in color and over by the Fuse panel. There is a similar connector on mine over by the center area but its dark brown.

That box with the number 9 on it is gray in color and it is about the size of a pack of cigarettes. 1997

Apologize for not having any updates.

Replaced pads and rotors on our, ugh, Saturn on Saturday, and covered up the ECM, and took apart one side of the trunk to remove and repair the fuel door actuator (it's epoxy glued and ready to re-install) on the J30. Sunday replaced two bathroom faucets.

no problem. What do you think if I just try taking out the plug going into that gray switch and see what happens?
