So, I've been looking for a temperature sensor for my car. I know that its an entry level car and that it doesnt have all the gizmos and gadgets, but my sister has a 2004 (I think) Saturn Ion...about the ugliest car from inside to outside...and it HAS a sensor built into the mirror.
Well, I wanted one, and those mirror are way too much $$$. So here is what I did if anyone is interested.
I went to walmart, and for 10 bucks, I got an "accurite" indoor/outdoor wireless thermometer. Its white, so I taped up the LCD and sprayed it black with krylon fusion camo black...Very flat black and looks good with the dark interior.
I used velcro to attach it just above the cupholders but pointing forwards.
I also put in 3 Amber LEDs from ebay and wired them up to the dimmer switch so at night, they light up the thermometer and I can see it at night. The LEDs are above the cupholder. And btw, If you sand the LEDs with a high grit paper, it will diffuse the light and make it glow gently rather than be a harsh light with ugly artifacts.
As for the remote sensor... I wrapped it in a ziploc baggie to keep it water tight and and folded the excess baggie and duct taped it shut.
Im not sure if its the best place, but I put it behind the fuel door and tucked it in the part that holds the fuel cap when you fuel up. I think its pretty safe, but im sure some of you dont. Another place to put it would be near the front bumper down low and far up front, but I thought heat from the pavement would give me funny readings.
Either way, It looks great and is VERY accurate. I am a happy camper!
