For some reason I got this sudden urge to see what A-Eights were selling for on eBay.

And you thought Q45 resale values took a beating.

Yes, you can pick up a lower mile same year A8 for less than an A6 ... kind of like how Maxima's and I30's go for more than a Q

I live the look of an A8, but can't imagine repair costs can be "managed" as well as we manage Q repairs and upkeep costs.

Hmm. That is true.

I wonder why that is? And to think, I almost purchased one. It was a green 97 from an auto auction. Good thing I got the Q instead.

Wrong board. I've read the A8 boards, and because of that and my knowledge of Audi reliability, I would never own one.

That's awful.

What are some of their main issues? You know, how the transmission is the weak link in G50's.

Japanese V8 transmission are not a weak link they pretty much all last beyond 120k.

German Trannies especially newer ones are less robust since they often have shorter warranties.

Just saying what Keith told me. He said the VH45DE was basically bulletproof, but the weak link was the transmission. I believe I've seen it said on the board as well.

Is that the main issue with Audi's? Unreliable transmissions?

My original transmission has 210,000 on it,operating perfectly.......more misinformation you are spewing around here.

So, Keith is wrong then? He's not as knowledgeable as it's widely believed you're saying?

I am quite sure Keith is very knowledgable when it comes to all things Q, and I am sure he and lots of techs see lots of Q with bad trannys- a large percentage of those bad trannys were caused by owner {and previous owner{s} failure to frequently change the ATF}

History has proven these transmissions to last over 200K if maintained from day one- impossible for 2nd,3rd,4th, etc owner to reverse the damage caused by lack of frequent service from the beginning

I just purchased 18qt of Redline D4 synthetic ATF at $9.95/QT to replace the current Redline D4 when it hits 25,000 miles of usage-not many owners see the value of top quality fluids replaced frequently, however I feel they will double the life of the component for your time and investment

Uh huh.

When I suspected a bad transmission because I am "oh so dumb", I had Keith go on a road test with me. We tore Mantua up. He commented on the condition of the Q and praised it's low mileage. He then told me that the transmission was in good shape and had a great positive shift. When I told him of my intermittent problems, he suspected the seals. He told me that he would rebuild it if I really wanted it done, but he didn't recommend it. I went armed with my 2nd gear start TCU to see if he recommended putting it back in.

Upon discovering my transmission issues before seeing Keith, I went for a drain/refill and pan drop. The next week, I went and got a mechanical flush.

I've been doing my part.

The weak link may be the fact that the trans cooler needs to be added.Maybe thats what you were thinking about?

Perhaps. I was just passing along what I was told. I wasn't speaking on the subject as a transmission expert.

An Audi A8 is never a good deal at any price imho. I would rather own a dozen broken active Q's than an one out of warranty Audi A8.

After watching my brother sell the farm to buy parts, and helping him with much of the wrenching, I'd never own an Audi. It went down the road nice...when it was running. But when they get some years on them....they're junk.

I would have to agree that Audi's are nice but they suck for reliability. They are one of the worse rated cars for reliability.
